December 14, 2025Dec 14 Hi, Everyone. I am based in South-Africa, Limpopo, Tzaneen.I have a Deye 8kw inverter connected to 8x Pylontech US3000 batteries, rack mounted. I noticed that one of the batteries seemed skew in the rack, found it is due to swelling. Further inspection revealed that 6 (3 badly and 3 starting) of the 8 batteries are swollen. Battery manufacturing date is 2020-08-26, installed January 2021 by myself. Battery setup/settings are default pylon settings on the inverter, custom settings not possible, at least not from what I can see. Charge and discharge current settings on the inverter are well under the nominal current. Advice needed please.Kind regardLouis
December 14, 2025Dec 14 Swollen batteries are pretty much end of life and can become a safety concern. BatteryView can be used to see the history of Pylontech batteries. You can try contact your supplier to see if you can get any warranty and Pylontech support in my experience have been reasonably responsive to help troubleshoot. On Deye custom settings are possible using Batt-V mode. When I set up a system I program the voltage cutoffs using Batt-V and then change to BMS-Li. In the advanced settings page, particularly for pylontech I believe, you should enable BMS-stop in case the communications is interupted (otherwise it will default back to Batt-V settings). Details on recommended charging settings for Pylontech can be seen here: https://powerforum.co.za/topic/2322-youdas-off-grid-lab/page/4/#findComment-64125 Unfortunately I have witnessed many Pylontech installations swell, even when using battery communications to the inverter and as such have avoided using them generally. How many cables are connecting the battery stacks to the inverter? For every 100A max draw you should have a pair of power cables i.e. 2 sets for an 8kW inverter.
December 14, 2025Dec 14 Author Hi, Shadders.Thanks for responding.I have two pairs of cables connected, one on the top of the chain and one at the bottom. My inverter is only set to a max current draw of 120 amps for charging and discharging.From what a gathered the suppliers are not keen on doing warranty claims, but will give it my best shot for what it's worth. I'll also reach out to Pylon for assistance.I never thought it would be necessary to use custom settings, due to the default Pylon setting. Great info from the link btw. If I understand you correctly, then this was inevitable no matter how conservative it was setup. Before I purchased The Pylons, I have researched quite a bit and only saw good things about them. What is your preferred battery of choice?

What is your preferred battery of choice?With custom settings we normally meant using voltage as the the setting and then we don't use the comms cables and you choose Batt voltage and not lithium or %. I hope you come right with a claim but normally they will find at times the maximum voltage was exceeded as the Pylon does not prevent high short term voltages during charging. Many a member has found that out when claiming. Pylon must provide you with the proof of over voltage. That as well as discharging too high a current but as you indicated your setting was low for 8 batteries. All the best during this sad time with a lot of money at stake. Also the fact that you installed it yourself makes it more difficult.

Have a look at the battery logs and if they show no over voltage it is well worth going for a warranty replacement. If the supplier won't do it then go direct to the manufacture, many have had good success.I do think though the Pylontech bms has a flaw in that it does not shut the battery down to protect if from over voltages early enough. It will send CAN messages to the inverter to stop it but then you are relying on that communication which many people don't think necessary and don't use. A good set up generally won't have problems.The latest firmware for the battery does drop the max charge voltage requested from 53.2v to 52.8v, but again this requires inverter battery communication.
