November 20, 201510 yr Another question to the Axpert experts... while the 5KVA unit is in bypass mode, i.e. switching the output straight from the grid, is it still limited to 5KVA? Does the 5KVA limit only apply when running off the batteries/PV? If the 5KVA limit only applies while "inverting", what is the limit when grid bypass mode is on? I cannot seem to find this info in any manual. I get the idea the bypass is handled by a relay, and it does not pass through the inverter's FETs, etc. Usually the inverter's FETs and switching inductor, etc is what determines maximum load. Unless, off course, they have a relay switching the bypass that is in itself also only capable of switching 5KVA. Anyone know?

In bypass mode the limitation still applies - the inverter will start to complain and eventually switch off (overload situation).
November 20, 201510 yr The incoming supply: Live to circuit breaker, double pole safety relay (bypass), load detection, single pole relay (output).
November 21, 201510 yr Interesting, I must keep this in mind for reference. With the Victrons the transfer switch capability is usually twice the inverter capability. But mostly the reason why I'm butting in on this topic, is because I noticed something else that's interesting, relating to the comment above that the FETs are not involved when we bypass. With the Victron, if I start a large load while on bypass, I can hear the inverter make the same "brrrrm" sound it would if it was actually driving a load. My guess, however, is that mine is actually set to do power assist for a higher level, so it might be participating in the "transaction" even if not called on to deliver any power :-)
November 22, 201510 yr Author Interesting. This morning on ours, while running on PV/Batteries, our load went >4KW, and immediately the inverter switched to bypass mode. As an aside, even after removing the load it stays on bypass mode now instead of reverting to PV/Batteries, but I assume this is because I told it in one of the settings not to switch back to batteries until they are full again. It's just interesting because i did not switch to bypass because of a low battery, but because of a high load. I suppose, technically, these could be seen as the same thing.
November 22, 201510 yr My victron multiplus states that it can do 100a in bypass mode. That's close on 5x its capacity. I've limited my wiring and breakers to 40a though.

Yeah, I meant to say it's at least twice the capacity (on the smaller models), and then the larger Multpluses and Quatros also have two models, for example I think on the 3kva you have a choice between 40A and 70A on the transfer switch :-)
