PI Venus touchscreen instructions

Featured Replies

I wrote-up some instructions for configuring Venus to use the 3.5" SPI touch screen (MPI3501), and put them on the Victron Wiki

https://github.com/victronenergy/venus/wiki/pi-Venus-install-Touch-Screen-(MPI3501--ILI9486-320x480-LCD)

May be of use to others here!

The touchscreens are really cheap too!  I only paid 65RMB for mine (R130 ish).

I LAUGHED at this! "Touch the screen appropriately (after first buying it dinner and drinks, and getting consensual permission etc.)"

🤣

You should also tell people on the community site.

I actually googled how to get it working, and it led me to a the google groups list, where others had similar questions - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/victron-dev-venus/5OYoQpXbLa0

The internet was playing nicely enough for me to access google reliably enough to post (China, bleh, vpn etc), so I wrote up some instructions, took me around an hour of fiddling about to get mine working, as I had no instructions, and was unfamiliar with overlays and config.txt peculiarities.  Plenty of *nix experience, and embedded dev, so got there in the end ;)

Posted to the wiki, into the victron google group, here, and  to Reddit too.  Surely thats enough haha?

Yeah there is a guy who built one of these for his van, he even has a youtube video on how to get it done. In the beginning I even helped with some directions, I have since gotten way too busy to spend time on that project. Which is a little sad, I'm the guy who made the port! 🙂

Right from the beginning I included a few device tree overlays for touch screens, because i knew people might want to use it. The very first touch screen support for the gui, that was also around 3 lines of C++, but since then a lot went into it to make it really work, mostly because the CanVu500 needed it.
