January 25, 201610 yr Check the levels every few weeks ensuring the plates are covered at all times with +-1cm of water above them. As you get to know the batts, maybe once every 2-3 months. Maybe add some water every few months, if there was a lot of charging taking place. All depends on how hard they are used. I check mine +-once a month, after I equalized them that day using my charge controller. At the time I am checking the water I also check the gravity. That way I can see what each cell does. That takes +-5 seconds per cell. It is actually quite a satisfying experience when checking the batts after months of use, seeing the gravity still at the bottom of the green i.e. 1.30 on each cell, meaning the batts are still in near perfect condition, no surprises on the way. So no, they do not require quite a bit of maintenance.
January 25, 201610 yr And if you want, you can get a Trojan watering kit. That way you never have to water them, just make sure the container has distilled water in, and distilled water can be obtained for free.
January 25, 201610 yr Author ok, let me see if I can change the order. Wish I'd looked up the 6V batteries earlier. I just recall first time I looked at them, they were way out of my budget.
January 25, 201610 yr And (not to add any pressure), on Trojans, best you buy before the current stock is sold out and the new exchange rate kicks in when new stock arrives. and how much 105's go for now?
January 25, 201610 yr Ibiza, if there is still stock, for T105RE's (6v 225ah at 20hr) batts, the price is R 2 560.23 incl VAT per batt. Depending on where you are and how many, may even include free delivery. Special for forum members only.
January 25, 201610 yr Out of interest. Watering kits are where (depending on stock): Watering Kits 48 volt Premium Watering Kit (Signature Line) R 2 512.24 incl VAT 48 Volt Industrial Line watering Kit R 5 511.89 incl VAT
January 25, 201610 yr Tnx TTT. I need 8xT105RE's. live in Jo'burg. Isn't the problem charging Trojans with Axpers MPPT charger?
January 25, 201610 yr Tnx TTT. I need 8xT105RE's. live in Jo'burg. Isn't the problem charging Trojans with Axpers MPPT charger? I used to think this, but the friendly people here corrected me. The problem is only with the golf-cart T105 which needs the higher voltage (14.8V for a 12V string) to absorb. For the T105RE the Axpert is fine for daily use. It cannot charge high enough for equalisation though, as far as I know. TTT will know more about this. This has the rather inconvenient side-effect that if they need an equalisation charge, you need to switch off for the day and charge them with an external charger.
January 25, 201610 yr Equalization charge are for off-grid systems, as they never really get a whole day to get to float voltages. Most separate controllers have a equalization setting, where you can adjust the volts for your batts, done automatically or manually. Re. charging with Axpert, I believe quite a few p[people here use Trojan's with Axpert inverters. All I know, the specs are here for charging the Trojans: http://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/datasheets/T105RE_TrojanRE_Data_Sheets.pdf Voltage per cell: Absorption charge 2.35v - 2.45v Float charge 2.20v Equalize charge 2.58v Johannesburg, depending on the area, amount of batts, are no problem for collection, or delivery. 8 x T105RE's, depending on where you are, can maybe be delivered at your chosen address.
January 26, 201610 yr Out of interest. Watering kits are where (depending on stock): Watering Kits 48 volt Premium Watering Kit (Signature Line) R 2 512.24 incl VAT 48 Volt Industrial Line watering Kit R 5 511.89 incl VAT Hi Jaco What kit fits on the T105 RE's. Thanks Thys
January 26, 201610 yr Hi Thys, I have been told (read I understood correctly), that you have to buy the 48v kit and only use what you need for 24v, that the connectors are standard for T105RE's. If there is interest, I can confirm, for I just put it out there out of interest.
January 26, 201610 yr Just putting it out there, there is still stock of Trojan Watering Kits 48v Premium Watering Kit (Signature Line) @ R 2 512.24 excl delivery from Cape Town, or, if you are in JHB, I can arrange that you can collect it there.
January 26, 201610 yr Just read this on another forum, credits to the poster: We had a massive lightening strike in the front yard last month. The three items that had unbonded ground stakes (underground phone/internet line, Dish TV antenna outside box, and electric fence) all melted. I have 4 Midnight Solar surge protectors (2 DC and 2 AC). Nothing except the 3 items with separate grounds was damaged. Neighbors 300 yards away lost most of their plugged in electronics like TVs and game boxes. One of the DC surge protectors is wired at the combiner box for the ground mount panels. While I understand that these surge protectors can't handle huge spikes I believe they kept the lightning from frying anything in the house and the solar system. On the Dish TV line, both connectors in the outside box were burned along with the ground protection bridge (Dish repair man had never see that) along with actually burning the coaxial cable under the house and actually popping the cover plate off the little box just before it went into the indoor sat box and it also burned the sat box half way out (it still searched for a satellite but it wouldn't work after even after repairing the other antenna cable damage). I credit the 4 Midnight surge protectors for saving my electronics.
