Most appliances follow ohms law to some extent - resistive loads will strictly follow it. For instance a 2000W 220V kettle will use half the current at 110V; equating to a quarter of the power - 500W. Only devices with SMPS will use the same amount of power (roughly - losses will be a bit higher) at different input voltages - as long as they are rated for that voltage. All but the poorest-designed SMPSs will also have under-voltage lockout protection, which means they will switch off or not power up if the input voltage is out of spec.
March 12, 20215 yr Author OK.... so the solution I have for now is to run my Goodwe on the 50Hz Grid Default setting rather than the "South Africa" setting. Goodwe tell me that under the latter the inverter will disconnect at 195 and only reconnect at 200. They recommended the change to the default setting. I discussed this with the installer and we'll see if it improves stability. However there is a warning that some some "protections" on the system will be disabled. Too much for my tiny little non-electrical mind. So we made the change and we'll observe.

And it now reconnects pretty quickly and at low voltage, and doesn't disconnect during the day when voltage is fluctuating. I do wonder though. Lower voltage means current goes up to get the same power, and the backed up side of the system is current limited. So I suppose if too many things kick in at the same time we could more easily go over the 20 amp limit (30 amps for 10 seconds). So maybe this a choice between swings and roundabouts.
