I don't know if I fully agree with you. A newly opened inverter, which is "SWITCHED OFF" (why do you guys should this out, like no one ever switches off these things??) still causes a spart / arc to happen. I have actually blown a fuse through such an arc, and on a car melted a terminal as well. There's a reason why your car has relays for all the heavy load stuff, after the fuse. A normal switch will burn out if you pass 40A or 60A though it, let alone 250A, 520A or even 800A. The Microcare inverters have them built-in, the Axpert manual says you need to put a "DC breaker" both on the battery side, and the PV side.

Battery Charge Rates
Have you tried the generator on the Axpert yet? My Axpert doesn't seem to like it much, keeps beeping a lot, though I can't see what the error / reason is. It's only a 6900VA generator thought so I don't know the generator doesn't produce clean-enough power.

The problem is, that a DC spark, caused by a large battery bank could cause a LOT of damage! Using fuses only won't stop the arc / spark. Saying not to disconnect the batteries under load also doesn't help much. If the battery bank is full, it will still arc when you connect the inverter, even when off. Neither Axpert or Victron inverters have a DC isolator, yet the Microcare does.

Hi, As the title suggests, can I use a normal AC Isolator for a DC battery bank? I know AC and DC is a bit different, but I don't know if these Isolators can't handle DC currents, or even an Arc when you open / close it? If it's possible to use an AC isolator, what do I need to use on a 48V, 540A bank?

Thank you. I have sealed lead acid batteries, so can't use a Hydrometer. The reason I am asking is cause I want to set the right settings on an Axpert inverter, for charging, switch-off, etc, in order for my batteries to last many years

Understanding and using DOD?
Hi, Can someone please enlighten me on Depth of Discharge, and how to apply it on an inverter? Many sites on the internet suggest that you run your batteries on 50% DOD, or even 30%, in order to let the batteries last longer. So, now the first question is: 1. How do I calculate 50% DOD, on a 48V battery bank? Let's work with 12V as a reference since that's the "industry standard battery". From what I know a full battery is 13.8V. Is "empty" then at 10.5V, or 11V? And is this under load, or with no load connected? 2. What is best, to start charging batteries at 50%, or 70%? I have an Axpect 5KVA inverter with 48V 250Ah battery bank, if that helps at all?

Hi, Can you please explain, how exactly do you calculate the 30% DOD? i.e. on a 48V battery bank, how do I know how much is 30%, exactly? i.e. how many volts?
