  3. During Enlit Africa 2026, Bain Viljoen, CEO of Lithium Batteries South Africa, shared some insight into locally assembled, serviced and supported battery solutions. The discussion focused on how local battery manufacturing and support can help address some of the common challenges often experienced with imported energy storage products, especially when it comes to technical support, serviceability and long-term reliability. Bain also touched on the role of advanced battery technology, solar integration and intelligent energy storage systems in creating more dependable power solutions for South African conditions. Sharing the video here for anyone interested in local energy storage development and the direction of battery solutions in South Africa.
  4. At the Standard Bank Enlit Africa Gala Dinner earlier this year, Lithium Batteries South Africa (LBSA) was honoured to receive the Battery Safety Innovator of the Year 2026 award. We're incredibly proud of the recognition, but it also raises an interesting question: What does battery safety innovation actually look like in the real world? Because battery safety is about far more than certificates, compliance documents, or marketing claims. It's about what happens when things don't go according to plan. The Industry's Biggest ChallengeAs lithium battery adoption continues to grow across residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial applications, one topic keeps appearing in industry discussions: How do we make energy storage safer? Battery Management Systems have become more advanced. Cell technology continues to improve. Monitoring systems are getting smarter. Yet the industry is increasingly recognising that safety requires multiple layers of protection rather than relying on a single solution. The question is no longer whether safety matters. The question is how far manufacturers are willing to go to improve it. Our Approach at LBSAOver the last few years, a significant portion of our development effort has focused on improving battery safety across our product range. This includes: In-house designed Battery Management Systems (BMS) Advanced monitoring and protection strategies Fireblock-integrated fire suppression solutions Fireblock Suppression Ready battery platforms Extensive real-world testing and validation Battery designs developed specifically for African operating environments One of the most interesting lessons we've learned is that battery safety is rarely about a single feature. It's about creating layers of protection that work together. Safety You Can Actually SeeOne of the reasons we have been so passionate about demonstrating our technology publicly is that safety claims are easy to make. Demonstrating them is far more difficult. Over the past year, many people have seen our thermal runaway demonstrations where Fireblock suppression technology was deployed inside a battery system. The purpose wasn't to create a marketing stunt. The purpose was to show what happens when a battery experiences a serious internal event and to provide a transparent view of the results. Because ultimately, the industry benefits when manufacturers openly discuss safety rather than treating it as an afterthought. A Recognition for South African InnovationReceiving the Battery Safety Innovator of the Year award was particularly meaningful because it recognised work being done right here in South Africa. Too often, advanced battery technology is viewed as something developed elsewhere and imported into Africa. The reality is that South African companies continue to develop innovative solutions that address the unique challenges faced by our market. Harsh environmental conditions, remote installations, agricultural applications, industrial sites, and growing energy demands all require solutions designed with local realities in mind. Where Do We Go From Here?Winning an award is a great milestone, but it is not the finish line. If anything, it raises the bar. As battery systems become larger and more widely adopted, safety expectations will continue to increase. New technologies will emerge. Standards will evolve. Customer expectations will grow. And that's a good thing. Because every improvement in battery safety helps strengthen confidence in energy storage as a whole. We'd be interested to hear from the Power Forum community: What safety features do you believe should become standard in lithium battery systems over the next five years? Integrated fire suppression? Advanced thermal monitoring? Improved installation standards? Something else entirely? The discussion around battery safety is only getting started.
  5. What actually happens inside a lithium battery when thermal runaway occurs? It's a question that gets asked often across the energy storage industry, but very few people ever get the opportunity to see the answer. At Lithium Batteries South Africa (LBSA), we wanted to move beyond theory and show a real-world example. Using a 5.3 kWh LBSA Fireblock Suppression Ready Battery, a controlled thermal runaway event was initiated to demonstrate how integrated fire suppression technology responds under extreme conditions. The TestThe battery was placed into thermal distress and monitored as the event developed. As designed, the integrated Fireblock suppression system activated automatically, deploying Fireblock Lithium Gel directly inside the battery enclosure where the thermal event was occurring. No external intervention was required. The suppression system responded from within the battery itself. Then We Opened the BatteryAfter the event, the battery was carefully opened to inspect the results. What we found was remarkable. The Fireblock Lithium Gel had deployed throughout the affected area, covering the cells involved in the event and visibly spreading through the battery compartment. The thermal event had been contained within the battery, preventing further escalation and limiting the spread of heat. The green gel visible throughout the battery tells the story better than words ever could. It provides a real-world example of what integrated suppression technology looks like after activation. Why This MattersAs lithium battery installations continue to grow in homes, businesses, farms, and industrial facilities, battery safety remains one of the most important discussions in the industry. While battery management systems play a critical role in preventing faults, the reality is that additional layers of protection are becoming increasingly important for high-value energy storage assets. The ability to respond to a thermal event internally, at the source, provides another level of safety that traditional external firefighting methods cannot achieve on their own. Seeing Safety in ActionThere is no shortage of claims in the battery industry. What makes demonstrations like this valuable is that they allow people to see the results for themselves. No simulations. No animations. No marketing graphics. Just a real battery, a real thermal event, and a real suppression system doing exactly what it was designed to do. As the industry continues to push for safer energy storage solutions, practical demonstrations and transparent testing will remain essential in helping installers, engineers, insurers, and end users understand what modern battery safety can look like. What are your thoughts on integrated fire suppression inside lithium batteries? Is this something you see becoming standard practice in the future?

  13. For the Goodwe Inverters you will select the Default (100ah) protocol
  14. Good day, With the current setup, you run the panels and the battery to the inverter MPPT port. If you know your load is heavy most times, it's advised to double the panels to allow adequate power for the battery to also consume. Panel voltage is advised to be 100-150V higher than the battery voltage for optimal charging. The current setup allows for 15A charging; this can be doubled upon request and will require a small lead time. The battery will always allow charging from the panels, but can be configured with time of use to only discharge at certain times. This allows the battery to reserve power for the high-rate periods, drastically maximizing your ROI. You can also request special configurations where the panels are cut off from the inverter, should you want certainty that the battery is charged fully. Once the battery is full, the panels will be routed to the inverter via an aux contactor. Then, when your high-demand times kick in, the battery will engage the main discharge control, allowing the battery to supply the loads. If your inverter is fine with it, you can parallel multiple MPPTs from a central busbar as well as the batteries. to allow the inverter to use the full 100A capabilities of the battery.
