Wind Turbine Installation

Featured Replies

Hi

If you want to install a wind turbine please note that this is not a device you can install straight out of the box. It requires work first and in my case, significant modification. Lutech Engineering  helps in the development of renewable technologies, wind turbines as well as conventional fossil-fired thermal plants. I used this service and I am happy with their work.

So a final update on this.

Eventually the wind turbine burnt out the controller when trying to brake the turbine against a really strong wind. So this experiment is no more, although the turbine still stands on its tower as a conversation piece and a warning against trying wind generation on the highveld. The main problem is that the wind doesn't blow very often, and when it does, the sun is usually shining in any case, so there is very little for the turbine to do.

There were only a few instances where there was very strong wind overnight where there was a measurable input from the turbine.

So lesson learnt.

Thanks for the experience gained and sorry to hear the down side.

I do think it's important that we consider the actual average stats of wind speed and also to use a weather APP beforehand and record the expected wind speeds. This can save a bag full later. Also not difficult to set up a small DC motor with fan connected to a voltmeter to take some measurements over months.

Also I think we do under estimate the wind power force when it really blows strong and more so the gusts.
