Good day all,

New to the forum. I'm building a battery backup system that I plan to add Solar panels to later. I initially bought 2x "deep cycle" SLA batteries that turned out to not be so "deep", with a HA02 balancer but have decided to go the Lithium route instead.

Would be grateful for any advise ito brands and models to consider that would be compatible with my type of inverter. Rack mountable would be ideal.

The inverter is a Lalela 3000w 24v pure sine wave inverter.

The canbus comms is always a question?

You would probably need to check with your supplier?

You should be able to at least be able to set the inverter to battery type USER defined and set the values even without comms. According to the manual, it also has a comms interface but it fails to advise what the interface is compatiable with, only that it is RS485 or canbus if i recall correctly.

Pylontech also offer a 24v lithium battery with a much higher cycle count of 6000?

Have you considered maybe moving to a 48V inverter and Lifepo4?  The reason i am asking is that the 48v pylontechs up5000 are about a third more expensive and give you about double the capacity?  And 48v is more home friendly as you want to grow the system, and get more benefit, and has lower losses, due to higher voltages etc.,  where as 24v is more for campers and caravans :) and usually not so friendly to upgrading /parallelling inverters?

Your recommendation of a 48v system is solid advice, I have considered this route but my current application is more of a UPS for my home office than a total home backup solution. We're searching for a new home at the moment and a few of the places we've seen already have systems installed hence we're just holding off for now.

From what I can tell, it seems to be a Voltronic type inverter. The manual refers to a supplied "custom" RJ45 cable and contains a caution that it should not be substituted for any regular network cable on account of the custom pinout... but it only came with a USB A-to-B cable in the box. The inverter itself has an RJ45 port, a USB type A port and a USB type B port labelled "wifi" which I assume to be for a connectivity dongle.

I had a look at the "Giter" brand 24v batteries but they only deliver 1200w. The Pylon UP2500 and US2000C are seeming like good options although, In my limited knowledge I cannot tell them apart 😅

So basically, my main option in the Pylon range right now is the UP2500?

To go lithium is a no brainer! I am seeing many lead acid batteries that are failing before 12 months use. This weekend I capacity tested a friend's Deltec "Deep Cycle" 657D as it was failing (after 9 months use). The battery measured 34.5AH at C/10 discharge rate. I am guessing that the battery was discharged regularly below 50% SOC and that caused the battery's early demise.

Unfortunately, the majority of those trolley inverters don't allow you change the inverter's low voltage cutout setting in order to preserve the battery. Also the float charge voltage is a tad low at 13.5V.   

Going 24V with lead acid batteries presents another problem - the batteries can become unbalanced, and one should use a balancer such as the HA02 which you used. 

The Pylontech UP2500 works well - I have one. Just remember that a single UP2500 can output only a max of 56A continuous. At a nominal 24V this equates to 1.3kW.

Hey @GreenMan, SLA kept me going for a while but the longevity is rather questionable. The two I have, along with the HA02 were never even used.

This is starting to look like a theoretical ceiling with 24v single battery systems. I'm actually going to look into returning the unit I have... Hindsight hey 😅

Yes that is why the majority of inverters are 48V.
