Settle family arguments with a kill-a-watt

Featured Replies

So I got the replacement kill-a-watt from GeeWiz, and this one works.

And it's very handy.

I ran it on one of my fridges for 1.25 hours. It showed
Total power used: 0.083 kWh - so it doesn't use much, right?
Peak power: 1698W - oh! So it can pull 1.7kW for a short period of time. (this is higher than I'd expected)

Put money on for an extra frisson.

Oops! This is the exact peak I found on the first test I did to see how it works and what it can do. Which was on the electric kettle.

So it has a memory function, and will remember highs and lows (and maybe some other stuff) until reset.

So I just reset it.

Good job there wasn't any money on it.

So the fridge (LG with inverter motor) uses about 35W when running, peaks out at 95.7 About 36W/h

The older deep freeze uses about 65W when running, but shows a much higher peak of 869W (this time I had reset). About 67W/h.

So this is quite a nice device for killing time or for answering life's important questions.

I could start boring people.

You will find that the highest usage is during the Defrost cycle, at least thats what I see clearly on my night time graphs.
The baseload is the inverse of the battery power, only difference is the battery power graph includes the Inverter usage ~60W.
At 02:40 is the defrost cycle, then a short period where the battery load power drops to about 130W before my Samsung Inverter Fridge starts up again and it settles around 165W.
Pretty similar 35W.

Thanks. I'll give it a longer run over the weekend so as to be sure to catch that defrost cycle.

I have had my inverter fridge freezer on a smart plug since we purchased the fridge.

On cold days it uses less that 450w for the day, lowest I have measured was 120w for an entire day, we were away and once the AI detects this power usage goes down significantly. You can see power usage go up in warmer months.

Between 10pm and 5am (thus is the time the AI is currently expecting us not to open the doors based on usage patter) it uses almost not power, in summer months the total power used according to the smart plug in this period is about 50w.
