Max charging current

Featured Replies

Good day all. O hav a mecer sol-i-ax-3vp inverter with 4 x 100ah deap cycle batteries and 1x 540 Solar panel. My question is. What should I  put my max charging curent on? Curently it is set on 30 amp. My i dea is to help charge the batteries during the day when it is load shedding.

Double whatever your battery recommends. Often the battery has the recommended maximum charge current on the label.

If you really can't find that information, 30 A is a good value. Many lead acid batteries recommend about 0.15C, so that would be 15 A per string, or 30 A for the whole battery.

I'm assuming that your battery is wired as two strings of two nominally 12 V modules in series.

Yes 30 amps is good .

It does not help to charge these batteries to fast as they mite reach there bulk volt quick and inverter my show 100% but still take hours of float charging  before they really  fully charged

Thanks for all the advice.  Yess i see mine does the same. I only have 1x 540w pannel what would be the best use for it? Charging batteries or sending its power to the load during the day?

Just my 2c.

With this singe 540W panel on a 24V PWM charge controller, my estimate is you'd see around 360W, or 15A peak charging power for the battery bank coming from solar. If this inverter does not blend power sources, if your house's baseload is anywhere around upward of 300W, I doubt you'll see much power actually coming from solar. You'd be likely to be drawing from grid most of the day, with occasional switching to solar around noon.

Personal view without having more detail on the panel specs or the home loads, is you could be better off charging the batteries from available solar, but not expect that it will supply enough to replace the drawn-down power, be prepared to top up from grid late in the day.

Thanks. During the we dont really use much power from the inverter during the day Its basically the internet and maybe home alarm.  I want to keep batteries full for loadsheding during the night.  Its only on weak ends the kids might play some video games during the day but other than that we do not have any thin using a lot of power constantly of the inverter. In future I  would like to get a second pannel.  Unfortunately the inverter only allows for 1200watt solar input.
