June 20, 20233 yr Hey all, So was speaking to a friend about me going the route of a DIY lithium battery and we got talking about fire suppression (His Hubbles apparently have built in fire suppression), I never knew the Hubbles had this and am wondering how common this is with lithium batteries often sold for solar use? Also any idea how effective this would actually be in the event of a fire inside the battery? Then the next thing is insurance, any idea whether insurance would cover a DIY battery or if something were to go wrong and a fire broke out because of a DIY battery? Just looking for a bit of info and feedback from those who have perhaps already looked into this.
June 20, 20233 yr Older Hubbles were NMC - which you would really not want to run without fire suppression. Most DIY installations will be LiFe which is not an ignition risk.

June 20, 20233 yr Author I forgot about the different chemistries for a bit. LFP just seems to be the new standard for batteries, although it has not always been the case. I had a quick read through this article: https://powerup-technology.com/nmc-vs-lfp-safety-and-performance-in-operation/ So LFP is not as much of a concern in terms of a fire / thermal runaway. This could happen with any battery as well, not limited to just a DIY battery or NMC battery. Anyone have some feedback / info regarding the insurance aspect of it? Would insurance cover a claim for a DIY battery (stolen, flood damage etc.) and would they cover a claim for a fire which happens because of a DIY battery?
