Net Metering?

Featured Replies

Trying to get information on net metering within South Africa - specifically, Johannesburg, has anybody managed to apply?

Keen to purchase more panels - but want to know if I should go all the way for the benefit of net metering in the long term.

As far as I understand, there’s no net metering. At least not for residential customers.

the best you going to get is the feed-in tariff of R1.xx depending on the municipality.

Unless you have massive roof space or yard space for a massive array then it is simply not worth the effort.
Also note - they may limit you on the amount of power you can feed back into the grid depending on what your street transformer capacities are...
Then also the fees you pay for the "privilege" to feed back makes it almost a waste of time.  And then if you look at what they pay you back... just does not make sense.

For most users simply finding more creative ways to consume their excess pv is the better way to go.

One day when we have a stable grid and decent feed-in structure then may be worth having another look.

Just my opinion.

I haven't tried but if you're a City Power customer

1) You will have to pay if a new meter is required or your current meter must be reconfigured. (AIUI some meters out in the field are capable of handling a feed-in, but the feature requires a firmware change)
2) NERSA feed-back tariff
3) The net purchaser requirement remains for residential customers. This means you can't sell more than you buy. Since your consumption from the grid is reduced already, you thus won't get paid very much.
4) There are fixed-fees per month for residential resellers. If you are on the default post-paid tariff this probably won't make much difference. If, like me, you are on pre-paid then that's about R800 a month extra you will have to pay with (see above) about zero chance of getting that much credit.

I have said, and I'm sincere, that I would give any excess production away just as long as it doesn't cost me anything. But under the current regulations it is going to cost me R100s each month to make my little contribution to the greater cause. So I'd rather give my inverter a breather once the battery is charged.
