Buying second hand

Featured Replies

When visiting on vtown walked in a solar shop ask for 370w panels for a friend. was showed a second hand refurbished panel for R1500 thought it's a good price and it looks good condition so friend agreed to buy them as he does not have a big budget and purchased 4 for him

Got home back in limpopo and on inspection found the white vynil at the back is cracked and in spots green was coming though so they are far from refurbished. But when they loaded the panel I only inspected the top to check for bad cels .

On testing they only produce 50% .

Feeling bad I removed 4 2 year old panel of my roof and gave them in place of the old bad panel

So when purchasing second hand panel check both sides and volts of each panel even if buying from a shop

Lesson learnt hopefully others will learn from my mistake

Yeah, the first warning sign should've been the price. New panels are 1900ish at the moment, no way I'd pay 1500 for lower rated refurb units imat current rates

Here we're I stay everything is more exspensive and have not priced panels for some time .

It's only after I priced panels to replace the panesl I gave my friend did I realize I got suckered bad .

Wil never spend or advice friend that stay in vtown to ever spend money at that shop ever again.

Will in the end just give those panels away to someone that just want to keep there battery toped up through the day from solar it will at least save them a bit of money not charging from grid in the day .

I did seal the vinyl at an extra cost to me of R500 so it was a big lose and down scale of my solar system .

Main lesson is ask here first :)

Yip.  walk into the shop thought at the time they look good and jumped into it with out doing a but of price research. Guess just a blond moment .

Should have known better as I ride along with   an house  electrician lots  and he  also does solar installation but  is not a solar part suppler only an installer  and as I said  there no cheap solar panels were I stay . So yip I bumped my head won't be the first and won't be the lasted .

Hope others learn from this posted
