Meter stopped turning after install

Recommended Posts

I got a solar system installed the same day the meter reading was taken. So I made note of the reading 5 days passed and the meter didn’t move. Then it moved like 10kwh for a day and got stuck. Now I can see the number is stuck and not ticking past a certain point. Has anyone had a similar issue or know what I can do to try unstuck it.

Just to confirm is the meter below the one you are referring to?

There is nothing you could do as it is seen as tampering if you try to do anything. Heavy fines if there is evidence you tried to do something.

Call the supply authority.

Or enjoy your free electricity from the grid.... Pity it happened now once you have your own system.

Would one not see it as fraud knowing it. Then feeling it is OK to do as is fashion in this country.

It will only take a month or two for them to realise the issue.
They will be there in due course to investigate.
Could it be that your system is feeding the grid and that this may have affected the meter?

You don't say where you live. I live in Johannesburg, and I know that here the municipality will notice the reduced readings and send somebody out to investigate. What happens next depends on where you live and what regulations are in place.

So I would not just leave this. But I also wouldn't touch the meter. Break the seal on it and it will be assumed that you were tampering.

@zsde is asking the right question: How likely is is that your system is feeding back into the grid? Some of those old electro-mechanical meters have a mechanism that stops the meter reversing.

Get your installer to check. It may also help to tell us what inverter you have.

@duncandee

100%correct @Scorp007it would be seen fraudulent if not reported and don't touch the meter inform your municipality. Attached the Industry news letter from SA Power Networks concerning analogue mechanical meters and SSEG's. See last page under #3

I think that on that document "SA" stands for South Australia.
