DEYE SUN-12K-SG04LP3-EU MPPT Input - 1 X 17A string possible on MPPT 1 input?

We have just installed the DEYE SUN-12K-DG04LP3-EU 3 phase inverter as a backup supply for our workshop /office.

We now wish to connect Trina 545W solar panels to this inverter.   Our electrician has told us that even though the Impp of the solar panel is less than the rating of the MPPT input 1 of the inverter.   The inverter can actually only handle 2 strings of max 13A each on the first MPPT input and not 1 string of up to 26A as shown on the nameplate.

Could someone clarify this for us?

I am pretty sure your electrician hasn't switched on his brain...

The only 2 ways for the 2 inputs on MPPT1 to be used is internally in series or in parallel, if its in series then they would tel you to limit the voltage per string and ensure the current produced by each is the same, else it would not function too well, but, I am 100% certain that the inverter internally parallels up the 2 MPPT1 strings and thus 26A is ok, however, you may find the connectors may not be great at this current, the fix would be to use both inputs in parallel to you solar panel string, but that is probably not necessary... I don't know the rating for the solar connectors, but I'd think for your 18.5A Isc , they should be fine...

Let me add further, that even if the MPPT1 can only handle 13A, then you could still connect your panels and the inverter would only every draw up to 13A from the panels, but I am certain this is not the case, it would be if those panels were to be connected to MPPT2.

according to the specsheet, inverter SUN-12K-SG04LP3-EU  has 2 MPPT trackers, equipped with 3 physical inputs.

  • Just put your panels into PV1 and you are okay.
  • Use one pair of MC4 +/- terminals.
  • Leave PV2 empty, for the future use.

17 Amps is not an issue for a single MC4 connector with a 6mm2 solar cable, therefore you don't need to combine both +/- terminals of PV1 together. Just make sure the MC4 crimp is done correctly and there's a good contact of male and female connectors when plugged in.

BTW: This setup of having two different MPPT inputs with 3 sets of terminals is quite common these days (at least in Europe). PV1 is meant for combining two strings, East + West. PV2 is meant for South string. (Yes, we face our panels South in the Europe).
