These terms are right out of the Deye manual so I’ll take a swing at it. Essential load and backup load are the same thing. Non-essential loads are connected to the grid and essentially bypass the inverter. They lose power when the grid goes down and do not use battery power. Home load encompasses all loads. Everything on your side of the utility meter is a home load.

Current install has the Geyser switch feeding an isolator switch which the feeds the geyser.
Edit : I read the instructions instead of just staring at the switch, imagine my suprise when the instructions clearly indicated how to install the switch 🤭

Haysdb got a reaction from I84RiS in Sunsynk - Non essential UsageLimit to Load, if it works like the Deye Zero Export to Load, uses an internal CT to measure loads flows in and out of the various terminals. It can’t distinguish non-essential loads from the grid. Only the essential and smart loads get measured. Everything in and out of the grid terminals is just import and export because no external CT is used.
With Limit to Load not checked it’s probably the same as the Deye Zero Export to CT which uses internal CTs to measure loads on the 3 terminals and an external CT to measure non-essential loads. The inverter knows how much power its sending out on the grid terminals and it knows how much power is going to the grid via the external CT, so it can calculate how much is consumed by non-essential loads.

Useful for running high-power devices during outages/load shedding; but still requires peak-usage management to prevent trips. Would be nice if there was an option to cut Aux first in the event of an overload, to prevent a full trip…
That said, if all you want to do is use excess solar for those high-power devices, you can leave them on non-essentials, install the CT coil that comes with the Sunsynk/Deye, and excess power will then be fed back to the non-essentials, since these models are bi-directional inverters. This is what many of us do; it’s pretty fantastic and allows a well-designed system to pay for itself relatively quickly.

As I understand it, the Smart Load will always first pull power from the PV (when available), then the batteries and then, when the batteries reach their minimum set SOC, the grid. I don't think it is possible for it to skip the batteries and pull straight from the grid.
You should, however, be able to get a workable solution by playing around with your smart load settings and minimum battery SOC value (the point at which your inverter pulls power from the grid).

If you need to "Kickstart" your AUX port by switching on the kettle then it means that your Smart Load (AUX) power setting is set too high... The inverter can't determine the maximum PV power available, it looks at what you're currently producing (which is partially determined by what load your drawing). I set my value quite low, around 200W. I then know that my Geyser can then still switch on until approximately 30 minutes before sunset...
@Brickman, yes, my AUX port switches On at 95%SOC. I found that in the last 5% SOC there is actually very little usable power in my batteries... Also, my BMS seems to slow down the charging rate to top up those last few percent so there isn't much sense in waiting for the SOC to reach the full 100% before my Geyser kicks in, 95% is "full enough" (if that makes sense)

In my opinion, there are discrepancies in Youtube videos from Sunsynk as well as their newest Installer Manual explaining this function.
I have a 150 litre geyser connected to mine and it operates as follows :
1) The solar power setting has nothing to do with the max power output - which is how they explain it. It is purely the PV power limit at which the relay will close and power the aux load Or open to disconnect, if it falls below the setting for a certain duration. It does not limit the power output.
2) If you have grid available and the total load - normal loads + Smart load - exceeds the PV available, it draws the balance from the grid and not from the battery.
3) If grid is not available it draws the balance from the battery - Starting when battery reaches the "Aux load ON Batt" setting which is 100 % in my case.
It switches off when the battery reaches " Aux load OFF Batt" - 95% for me.
It will not come on again - even if PV surpases the Power setting (4000w for me) until the battery reaches the ON Batt setting again.
4) On grid always on will always supply power to the Smart load output, when the box is ticked and grid available.
This can only be useful if manually enabled, after a rainy day, to "top up" your geyser.

When grid is available, AUX follows the same supply rules as UPS, which (when on-grid), is governed mainly by the table in the System Mode-System1 screen. Think of AUX as just an extension of UPS, separated by a Relay/Switch, which is powered on/off according to the Aux screen settings. If you drop the battery percentages in System Mode-System1 and specify a maximum allowable battery power draw under 'Power' for the appropriate time-slots, the inverter will supply both Load and Aux from PV supplemented by battery, within those limits; and will only hit grid when those limits are reached. You can then use this to cycle the battery down during the day (I go all the way down to ~15%), and then target closer to 100% as sunset approaches.

Meaning that (with 'On Grid Always On' un-ticked) if Solar Power (W) is above zero, the SOC Batt Percentage condition has to be met AND there has to be the specified amount of Solar Power (W) available)?
And for this Solar Power (W), is this amount being drawn from solar at the time? Or is this including spare availability (eg if batteries are full and house load is 900W - thus the system is only pulling 0.9kW - but the array could be generating 4kW if demanded, if you set the Solar Power (W) value to 2kW - will it power on? Or does it have to be currently-in-use PV that gets measured?)
These are questions we asked a while back on this forum (without clear answers) so having someone around who's got this working is helpful, here!
As an aide: I've been thoroughly enjoying watching my geysers heat, stove cook and pool pump when the grid is down thanks to this little Aux port...

With "On Grid Always On" switched OFF, then if the PV produces above the "Power" setting and the battery is between the specified %, the Smart Load Switches ON.

Non-Essentials hence needs grid to be powered up. In these grid-based scenarios, Non-Essentials would usually then work hand-in-hand with the supplied CT coil to get powered by the inverter (typically with excess capacity - depending on setup) using the same idea that regular grid-export uses: the Inverter just uses the Grid input as an output where necessary; with the CT coil preventing that export from leaving your premises by measuring demand and matching inverter supply (via the Grid port) to that demand; basically turning your house into the local 'grid'; hence the term 'Zero Export to CT' that gets used to describe it.
Hence in a fully-off-grid scenario, you won't use anything under Non-Essentials...
SmartLoad/Aux is then simply an extension of Load/UPS, separated by a switch/relay which the inverter turns off and on based on the parameters set on the SmartLoad/Aux page. Therefore, you're bound by the same maximum load that the Load port has; so a 3kW load on Load/UPS plus a 3kW load on Aux (6kW total) would exceed your 5kW rating and trip the inverter; whereas if that Aux load was a regular non-essential, that last 1kW would instead come from the grid without the inverter tripping.
In my case I've got both my geysers on Aux (in a 10kW [2 x 5-kW-inverter] parallel setup); but I still have to be careful that the timers they're connected through don't turn them on simultaneously - or I'll trip if the kitchen is busy at the same time.
As @Kalahari Meerkat explains, you can then set the battery thresholds to have the port - these 'Smart' loads - only turn on when you have spare capacity. You can't limit the power through the port, you can just decide when it must turn on by setting the battery on/off and Power thresholds. So in @Kalahari Meerkat's example, his Aux port will turn off when his battery dips to/below 45%, and then turn back on when the battery rises 50% again.
Whatever the draw on that SmartLoad/Gen port is, is what will be drawn: there's no limiting from the inverter; hence keep an eye on your maximum Load + SmartLoad not exceeding 5kW.

Haysdb got a reaction from Slarty in Deye importing from grid before using battery?I still see no way to set grid as a higher priority than battery. (Not that I’d want to.) I can prevent battery from being used below a specified percentage but that’s not setting a priority, that’s making battery power unavailable. I think much has been lost in translation from Chinese to English.

I call the modes Mode 1,2,3 because the names Deye gives them make my head hurt. Zero Export but allow export. Aaaaagh. What’s funny though is that I’ve yet to come up with better names so I think the solution is to just give them generic names.
