My feeble attempt at explaining Deye Work Modes.

Featured Replies

I would be extremely grateful for any corrections to this, or suggestions to make it more clear.

I call the modes Mode 1,2,3 because the names Deye gives them make my head hurt. Zero Export but allow export. Aaaaagh. What’s funny though is that I’ve yet to come up with better names so I think the solution is to just give them generic names.

I don't think Deye inverter "works" without a battery, similar to the Sunsynk. In other words, if no battery is connected it will not use PV to power any loads, it will use municipal/eskom supply to do so.

I might be wrong, memory is a bit sketchy on this.

Without a battery, Sunsynk/Deye work like grid tied inverters

100%. As per the normal requirement only when there is grid.

For most inverters grid or battery must be present.

Current design of a number of inverters can power loads directly from PV without either of the above 2 sources like @zsde indicated around the Growatt inverter.

Rather always connect the external CT coil when you are connected to the grid, and especially if you have non-essential loads connected.

There is a clear difference between "Selling First" and using Zero Export to Load or to CT with "Solar Sell" enabled. It relates to the immediate flow of power to/from the battery, and you'll notice a difference when changing between the battery priority or load priority settings. With "Selling First" you could export without charging the battery, it will stay at its level and slowly lose charge with inverter self-consumption. With Zero Export + Solar Sell modes, you could set your battery to charge by through the TOU settings, and the solar sell will be delayed or given a lower priority until your battery's requirements are met. Or something like that. Haven't done it in a while. You could play around with settings to confirm.

So with Selling First the batteries don’t get charged before the remainder is exported? It’s ALL exported? When do the batteries get charged?

I had assumed that the external CT would always be used if available, but when I switch to Selling First consumption flatlines. Nothing is reported and the log shows 0 watts consumed. The inverter is behaving as if the external CT is not being used in that mode. If it was it would be able to continue recording consumption separate from export just as it does in Zero Export to CT.

I look forward to experimenting when I have battery. I wouldn’t want battery first because I’d want to satisfy my loads before using any excess to charge the battery.

it absolutely boggles my damn mind how poorly these modes are explained in the user manual. And it’s not just Deye. Sol-Ark and SunSynk, although they use different terms, are equally pathetically bad.

Revised descriptions of the Work Modes. I’m still fuzzy on how battery is handled with Selling First. It doesn’t seem logical that power would be exported to the grid before the batteries are fully charged. What I would expect is that the priority would be essential loads, then battery (or vice versa depending on the settings) and then any excess to non-essential loads / the grid. Once the batteries are fully charged, without time of use they would remain at 100%. With TOU they would be discharged according to the schedule. I’ll verify all of this when I get my batteries installed.

Standard Chinglish problem, also encountered with any other piece of equipment that originate from China...

Hello and thanks for your time spend to explain this...

Are you able to sell anything to the grid from battery (in mode selling first)?
I have tried all the modes, but batteries (soc 90% and 100%) will not discharge.
Max discharge power was been set up to 200A also.

Have 20k hybrid inverter with external CT.

Also it is not possible to turn of Time of Use if I want to have peak shaving on.
