Help required: Earth tripping - but only when connected to grid

to classify the statement. in series means you are splitting 240v between two loads... they wont work. it means live goes into first AC and neutral of that AC goes into live of next AC and Neutral of second AC comes back to board. Parallel would mean that live and neutral from socket run to first ac and then both run from from first ac run to second ac...

 

but yes.  if they were in series it would probably be the issue :D

Brief udpate:

I ran for the rest of the day and throughout the night without problems - so I thought I had identified my aircons as culprits

Until around 08h30 this morning my E/L tripped again

So it's not the aircons...

Pulled everything in the living room (TV, DSTV, etc) from the plugs, flipped the E/L - and it tripped again before my finger was off the circuit breaker

Pulled everything from the rest of the plugs on that circuit and flipped the E/L. Stayed on.

Started plugging in stuff again one by one. About 30 mins after I had plugged in an Echo Dot and a Sonos speaker, the E/L tripped again. The Echo Dot is relatively new while the Sonos speaker is 5+ years old. But both are on 2-pin plugs, so without an earth - correct?

Have left the Sonos disconnected for now - and have now been running stable for the last 7h. Could this be my culprit?

Will see what happens next...

You perhaps have any Sonoff or similar smart switches? This is going to sound crazy but I've had to rip out all smart switches (and there were tons) because they simply didn't play well running on inverter. Also experienced nuisance tripping and one after the other during a period of a month each smart switch failing. It started with me isolating one as a cause and taking that one out and then it cascading to each other switch. Was an absolute nightmare. I have a Solis Hybrid though. 

Must be said I have 2 smart switches still connected to mains and off my essential loads DB that still operate perfectly fine still sans issues. So I know that anything smart switch related on the backup power side from inverter output is definitely problematic. I gave up trying to figure out the cause and essentially just moved from a full smart home back to a dumb home. 😁

Yes, my whole house is packed with Sonoff 

But on the circuit in question is only 1 Sonoff device - a Sonoff LED strip

Am not having any problems with any of my Sonoff devices on any other circuits

I watched a couple of videos where they explained about electronics in our homes causing leakage to earth, things like PC's, washing machines etc. Each device will have some minor leakage but once all of the devices together go over the 30mA of your E/L RCCB you get these nuisance trips. Apparently a Type B E/L can solve this. 

The qualified people can chip in here 🙂

just remember an earth leakage is not checking leak to earth. it is checking discrepancy between live an neutral... So yes a two prong plug is still protected by your earth leakage breaker

No. Unfortunately not yet.

They occur in random intervals, so it is extremely difficult to do fault-finding... At the moment have parts of the problem circuit physically disconnected and have been running stable for 2 days - but unfortunately that does not necessarily have to mean anything

Brief update:

The trips now also occur when disconnected from grid.

A sparky has meggered the whole house. All circuits are clean.

I have taken out all surge protector plugs I had in the house (red or green plugs). This seems to have reduced the number of trips - but they still occur.

My sparky has taken a few sockets to which only computer equipment is connected off earth leakage (turned into dedicated plugs).

Now the E/L trips when I switch on my home theater system - but not every time. Sometimes I switch on the system for 4 times without problems, sometimes it trips every time I switch it on. The system is fed via 2 separate circuits with the main power amp on circuit 1 and the rest on circuit 2.

I am running out of ideas on what to do. Does it make sense to take more circuits off E/L (e.g. aircons)? Can I take the circuit to which my main amp is connected off E/L?

I know this is an old post but I'm having a similar issue that's driving me insane. 

So, I have a 5kw sunsynk inverter back up system. 

When first installed it was running great but then it didn't take long until I noticed that my borehole pump would trip the EL on the essentials board which is where that plug circuit is for my borehole pump. 

It was intermittent and never got to the bottom of it but did notice that it only happened while the grid was on. 

Other than that it's been running fine for the last year or so, until 2 days ago. 

My essentials board E/L trips every time the grid is supplying to the inverter or directly to that board. 

If I have my change over switch to grid it will trip. I then switch down to inverter and then it works fine. 

The main CB feeding the inverter has to be off though because otherwise the grid supply passes through and trips the essentials E/L again. 

It did seem like it was the circuit for the borehole pump that was the issue but the E/L still tripped even after plugging the borehole/irrigation system out. It now trips even if all the breakers in the board are off.
