2kW Inverter Generator Load Sharing and SunSynk Inverter

Hi Everyone, 

I've read all I could on this forum about the topic but still could not get load sharing to work with my inverter. 

I've got a 2kW pure sine wave generator connected to the Gen port on a 5kW SunSynk inverter. When the generator starts it takes the full load. I want the generator to supply for example 1'200W base load and the inverter should top up the rest. 

When I start the generator it takes the full load, not partial load. Is it possible for the generator to supply partial load?

I've bonded the neutral and the earth. The generators supplies power so I assume I did everything correct. I've even tired a 5.5kW generator (non inverter) and same issue. The generator supplies the full load.

Found this guide on getting the generator to work on MyBroadband , helped a lot



Here is what I had to do:

1. Connect the generator to the AUX port

2. Connect the AUX port earth to the earth on the GRID port. I do not have the generator connected to a earth spike.

3. Connect earth and neutral together on the generator. This was done by using a 3 point plug with netral connected to eart with a short thick wire inside the plug. I inserted this earth-neutral plug into the second outlet on the generator. Very important is to remove this plug if you use the generator in a mobile fashion to power something like a hand tool etc. Also make sure to mark this plug as a bridge to avoid any potential problems.

4. On AUX menu, tick Gen Input and tick Gen peak shaving and set the shaving value to 80% of your generator capacity. Then set Gen Load OFF to 95% and Gen Load ON to 60% (choose your own values that work for you)

5. On System menu, Work Mode 2, tick Zero Export, AND Limit to load. My generator would disconnect if "Limit to load" was not ticked.

6. On System menu, Work Mode 1, make sure the SOC for the time slot you are running your generator in, is set to 100% and tick GEN box to charge from generator.

7. On Battery menu, make sure the Charge Amps on Batt Type is the same as the Amps in the first block on the second screen under Batt Charge. The first block is the amps for the generator charge and the second block is the amps for the grid charge. Also important is to make sure the charge amps is not set too high. Consider the power drawn from the generator to charge the batteries PLUS the power required to run the load and inverter.

8. Tick Gen Charge, Gen Signal and Signal Island mode on Battery menu under Batt charge.

I notice the OP System flow charge shows that genny is only generating 948W being the house load.

Only if you use the AUX port for the Generator input and configure as sc00bs listed

@PsyWulf I think that you could use the Grid Shaving setting if you are using a transfer switch to switch supply from Grid - Generator rather than using the Aux port. 

Using the generator/Aux port does also have the advantage that it steps the load in rather than just adding it which makes it a bit more forgiving.

You would have to go and change the setting though every time you switch from Grid to Generator though or it would only pull 800W from the Grid 🙂

Nope @PsyWulf, meant to tag you 🙂 . You said that you could only restrict the power to 800W if you used the Aux port. It is possible to restrict the power when using a generator connected to the Grid port using the Grid Shaving setting.

Thanks for all the replies. So I got the generator to carry the load and charge the battery. But it seems like my understanding of the peak shaving is not correct. I was hoping to use my 2kW generator to supply 1.6kW to our office during load shedding and when someone uses the microwave the generator would still supply the 1.6kW but the inverter would top up the rest. But that doesn't happen. 

So it looks like either the inverter, or the generator.

That is how it is supposed to work @Gerrit123, if the load is 2kw, it should pull 1,6kw from the generator and 400w from the battery. 

If the load is 1kw, it should be putting 600W into the battery.

I tried it this morning. The generator 2kW. The load limit on the inverter is set to 1.6kW, the office was pulling about 1kW and it was pushing 600W into the battery. 

Then, I turned on the microwave (1kW) so the load should go to 2kW (1.6kW from the generator and 400W from the battery). @Scoobs do you agree this is how it is supposed to work?

For me it didn't. The generator went into overload. 

Maybe the step load is too large for the generator. But it didn't work like I hoped. 

I'm going to buy a munch of solar panels on 1 March so it's just a matter of time now then we won't have this problem anymore.
