Solar installation

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I was wondering if it will be very difficult to install a solar system yourself. These days the batteries, inverters and panels are pretty much plug and play. Also the tutorial videos on internet and instruction manuals should be helpful.

Anyone here installed themselves,  any experience to share??

The physical install is easy as long as you follow correct protocol to pass the coc which you need afterwards.

Brackets under roof tiles, easy.

Rails to brackets, easy.

Panels to rails, easy.

Conduit from panels all the way to DB, through roofspace, easy.

Mounts of all equipment and DBs, easy.

Electrical work, get a qualified person.

Coc, get a qualified person.

I did my first install by myself based on lots of research and youtube videos. I didn't cut any corners and as a result It passed coc. I then did the course and passed with flying colours as i had the practical experience. It is relatively easy once you understand everything.

How did you earth the solar panels and frames to pass the COC? To the utility earth or a separate rod in the ground?

Added grounding lugs on the rails and separate rod to the ground(10mm cable used). Installed a surge arrester on the dc side(solar combiner box) for the incoming strings as well also running to the ground rod.
