Chris Hobson
I have finally connect my new Axpert and started running it this afternoon. I have it setup in Utility first and have the generator running. It runs in bypass for a few seconds and then clicks over to battery and then clicks to grid again and this process is repeat ad nauseum. I have tried to connect to grid watch so that I can se what is happening to no avail. Generator current is 238 -240V and 49 Hz. Any suggestions
Chris Hobson
I have solved the first part of this problem. It does not like being in UPS mode set to appliance mode and it running very nicely. Slight chemical smell , I am not sure what (hydrogen is odourless) perhaps it is new components heating up for the first time. Still trying to connect to inverter via PC. Chris Hobson
Its up. I have not managed to put any real load on it will try my wife's hairdryer. But seems to be running fine. It blew 2 63A fuses on the battery. Not sure why. May have been the initial draw to capacitors. Not a huge spark when I closed the battery disconnect. I asked for 100A fuses but they could not supply. Hope to get my PV DC breakers and more fuses on Friday. The PV breaker will be below the DB. Yes, I think the fuses blew because of the initial capacitor charge up - should have used the bulb method. About the smell, my infini did the same, but after a few days the smell was gone. I can't remember, but I think you have the 5KVA model - 63A fuses might blow frequently if you have frequent high loads. The Axpert manual mentions 87A typical and to prevent "nuisance blowing" keep the following in mind: The current rating of a fuse is typically derated 25% for operation at
Chris Hobson
Thanks SuperDIY. I wanted 100A fuses but they could not supply so had to go with 63A fuses. Should have used a bulb but it was late and getting dark. Fortunately I had some extra fuses. Running like a charm. Was trying to get the fans to run and only when I switched my PC off did I notice that the fans were indeed running. I had heard that the fans are very noisy. It is in my office/TV room and it would appear is not going to be disruptive 99% of the time. Started this morning at 51.0 V and batteries already full (generator on this morning). It only had LEDs to contend with last night. Will connect real loads once PVs are connected. Waiting for a DC CB to connect PVs (and more 100A fuses) which is coming up with a friend from PE on Friday. I am very chuffed with the system considering I was quoted 200k which grew with each "good idea". I have spent about R80k which includes a bit of wiring on the old farmhouse. I have separated essential and non-essential circuits so that the inverter just services plugs and some lights and the remainder of the lights run off the generator. DeepBass9
DIY definitely the way to go as you can size to your particular circumstances and requirements, plus its a lot cheaper! So you'll be off grid at the weekend? To disconnect ESKOM is quite easy. When I did it last month it was a case of switch ESKOM off, read the meters, phone ESKOM with the readings and 24hrs later your account is closed. Chris Hobson
In my case to disconnect is easy - you just have to be a tad lazy and not start the generator - I have no Eskom being about 8 km from the nearest point.
