May 11, 20197 yr How much in round figures do you folk pay (per kWh) for your grid supplied power in SA? Here in Oz we pay around A$0.30 (say R3) per kWh but with Federal elections just around the corner, the Gov't. says they will reduce this by 25%. Unlike with Eskom (I think??) our utilities are all now privately owned. Used to be Gov't. owned in the old days! We also get a Feed in Tariff of around A$0.20 for each kWh we feed back into the grid so that could well be affected if supply charges are forced down.
May 11, 20197 yr R1.85 per kw if we stay below 600 units per month. Feedback about R0.78c depending on the Eskom rate in the area - with extra charges and T&C's making it not really attractive to feed back.
May 12, 20197 yr Eskom Direct. 3 phase farm connection. If I use 600 units R4.83/unit 😫 Includes the fixed charges...
May 12, 20197 yr The fixed charges are a killer on a farm one. I heard though you can get a prepaid box on the old farm lines which isn't cheaper. Not sure if that is a rumour or not.
May 12, 20197 yr Eskom don't want to lose money so the rate is very dependant on usage... for prepaid. You really have to go Off-grid.!

Because of that, and the fact that we have to register the panels, I went grid tied. Costing CoCT about R1k per month in our savings. So the recent upgrades to the system - with the older parts sold on - would be quickly recovered. 👍 Edited May 12, 20197 yr by Guest

Interesting! I also have a 3ph farm connection but use very little power. Say about only 5 kWh/mth. However, I forgot to mention in my original post that there is also a "service" fee of R14.50/day. Still, I do ok out of it because I export about 1000kWh/mth so after all costs come out the utility deposits about R1500/mth into my bank a/c.
May 13, 20197 yr Durban area I'm on R1.74 per kWh, when the next increase comes it will move to R 1.98 per kWh.

I think that's a benefit of living in Australia. I would jump at the chance to zero my bill by feeding back but South Africa doesn't allow or even encourage this!

With the high fixed cost on the farm lines in SA, the less you use, the higher the effective cost per kwh. When I went off grid we were using about 400kWh per month, and that was about R5/kWh, four years ago.
