ProjectGKR
Hello My father in law Solar is using Axpert 5Kw inverter. Once in a while the PV side just stops charging. The supplier supplied me with new firmware. Looking a the file supplied, it looks like it is version 74.40 (Folder name in Zip file is AxpertMKS5K74.40P) Anyone know of any potential issues upgrading from 72.20 to 74.40? Thanks

I believe that you'll lose the ability to charge the battery beyond 58.4 V. It's also not obvious to me that a firmware seemingly designed for a 1:8 transformer (74.40) will even work properly and safely in hardware that seemingly has a 1:7 transformer (your machine that came with 72.20). If you do attempt this, please let us know how it goes. Edit: I now realise that this won't work at all; see this post. The system is running on AGM 200ah, but might first need to get hold of another inverter before attempting it as it is an off grid system and eskom option

Hi Boertjie, when i last did a firmware upgrade on a Voltronic I used a normal USB to Serial Converter together with the cables supplied with the inverter. I guess it will still work. I still have a laptop with a serial port, which might make life easier as not all serial to usb converters play nice

Where are you based as I see on another post that you are trying to update to 72.70 from 72.40?

One of the potential issues is this: it simply won't work. By which I mean that the firmware update tool supplied with 74.40 is not compatible with the firmware 72.20; the PC will send the wrong command, and the firmware update will not proceed. If you attempt this, the machine will appear frozen, but will come good when the battery power is cycled. Switching the rocker switch off and on will do no good. As a point of interest, firmware version 72.20 (and I assume earlier and later versions of it, if the latter exist) are the only ones I know of with this "protection". Given that they went to all this trouble, I'd say that it's a really bad idea to attempt it. You need to get back to your supplier and remind them that your father in law's machine is a 64-volt capable inverter-charger model, and the firmware update file that they supplied just won't work. That's assuming that there are no typos in the firmware version numbers in your original post. Edited November 17, 2019 by Coulomb
