HI All,

we had a lightning strike early January and it hit the inverter (Goodwe 4.6) and 3 x Pylontech US3000 batteries. Goodwe have responded saying they don't have a local workshop yet and its coming later in 2020 however they do now have a local representative in country which i have been in contact with (i'm fine to wait)

does any know who can look at my batteries, in the assessment i'm told the comms and power boards are blow (i'm none the wiser). i would like to get in touch with someone that can get spares, do a test and get the 3 old ones going again

i know lightning can be a funny thing but i think its worth a bash to see how we can revive them as they are only 3 months old

I'm in Johannesburg

regards Mark

Hi there Mark.

I have insured my system as part of my building insurance. When one of my friends small ellies system got damaged they paid him out for it no questions asked. They took the inverter and batteries and paid him at current replacement values.

I also lost the comms board on one of my Pylontechs to a lightning strike in January.

The battery will not talk to the other three, and also refuses to chat to the Raspberry Pi / ICC.  The BMS still seems to work fine, because its LEDs light up correctly when it charges & discharges.  I ended up making the next battery in the stack the master, but left the "mute" battery connected to the inverter & other batteries because it still contributes to the energy storage of the complete system.

I've also had no luck finding anyone to repair the battery yet, and the Pylontech warranty specifically excludes lightning damage....

How do we protect against lightning damage?

You can't. The energy that lightening discharges is massive.

If you have ever had a strike at your home and submitted a claim to your building (bond) insurance there is no argument normally. They will even help you to get a company to quote for replacement of specialist stuff (borehole pump repairs in my case).

So get onto your insurance company!
