Which one is that?

Listen, I have not delved in to this at all. Am told it is a "The cable is a VE direct to Ve direct cable that connects the MPPT to the Multi."

Probably just very well callibrated

We did not expect anything less did we? :-)

I need the cables to feed data, and I am not going CCGX. Bit to fast and far for me ... for now.

Nah if my Axpert fails I'll just say that I no longer need to play in the sandpit. Mommy says I can play with the big boys now. If it doesn't  fail I'll continue to berate Victron as expensive antiqua

  • You finally succumbed to the call of the Axpert?

  • Quite simply - whatever fitted the budget at the time. No other way to manage things. If it was another "Axpert" or "Infini" type then so be it.  If It was an SMA/Outback or Victron then yes please...

When you get it, post a picture here. I have a feeling it's going to be the 4-wire ttl serial cable you use to connect the MPPT to the CCGX. The comms between the two are different. vebus is a 2400 baud rate rs485 link. vedirect is a 19200 baud rate ttl serial link.

:-)

I will. Should arrive Monday.

Could be the one ...

This is what is one the way.

I can't see the other side of the cable. If the other side is a USB plug, well... then it's the famous vedirect usb cable. Either way... it doesn't plug into the multi :-)

These MPPTs are just awesome. In 50 lines of python we wrote a bit of software that shuts down the MPPTs if the BMS tells us the batteries are full. Buying Victron over the other makes, for me, is really for the same reason why I buy genuine Lego for my kids :-)

It's like legos, discovering more things you can do.

Good thing about legos, I could always build cool all-in-one driving/flying/boating things ;)

Rumour on the grape vine. Experiment going on to sync via bluetooth. So wireless syncing of charge controllers in the near future...

Of course, my concern would be security, but there are good security layers you can layer on top, and the range is rather limited.

Bad thing about legos, it hurts like hell when you step on them. Especially in the dark! I guess the same could be said about these little blue boxen?

The 100/15 is small enough that you might be on the money there! :-)

There is but one port on the controllers ... I rather use it to pull data.

Yes, I mean they are going to hack your controller and ... and ... wipe it. :D

Jokes aside, I see that wireless kbd and mice can be scanned from quite a distance: http://www.pcmag.com/news/346556/researchers-find-easy-way-to-hack-wireless-keyboards

Now THAT is a problem.

There is one port on them NOW... but I would expect that with built-in bluetooth, that will effectively give you two channels. At the moment adding bluetooth does mean you lose that one port, because  the bluetooth->ve-direct dongle does take up the only available port :-)

I have a feeling that with very little effort, you're probably going to find that it just runs ve-direct over a bluetooth serial profile, so the bluez stack on Linux is going to "just work"... but that is a completely different story.

The 100/15 is small enough that you might be on the money there! :-)

If you step on one of these you should be locked up...

Cannot afford to keep on upgrading. At one stage you have to stop ... unless you sell on to a newbie who wants to start.

There is a market for 2nd hand solar stuff. ALL my stuff first time round was 2nd hand, and I sold all on and then upgraded ... cycles starts again.

Well... yes. We all know those people who drive a 3-year old Hilux and then the facelifted model is released and they trade in that practically new car on the new one... cause they just have to have the pretty new one. But at some point you usually end up needing a new one, and then it is nice to know that the technology is no longer stuck in the 90s. I remember people on THIS forum laughing and pointing to the blue controllers that still don't have bluetooth :-)

Speaking of people trading in on the facelifted model, going off on a tangent a bit here. That is why you never buy a car unless that model has been facelifted. It's amazing how even a jap-mobile (which generally devalues below 10% a year) will just take a 15%-20% dive when the facelifted model comes out. Same car... nothing changed since yesterday... but now everybody wants the shiny new one and the old one is just that little bit less desirable.

Or you do not care and buy the older one at a even bigger bargain. Keeping up with the Jone's has never intrigued me. :D

That recipe falls comfortably within my facelift requirement. :-)

By year 6 the average Toyota has stopped depreciating, ignoring inflation of course, but by then the next model has likely been facelifted. This is the car you buy if you really don't care :-)

I just paid R12,000 for a 1972 Chevvy, yesterday. What does that make me?

Someone who really likes good old Chevvy's. V8? Even better.

I love the sort of "compression" that is taking place at the lower end of the spectrum. So because of our financial status in this country, second hand cars are holding their value remarkably well. So all those ten-year old (and older) Toyota Tazzes? A good one will still sell for more than 30k. Which means your RunXes and entry level Corolla AE110 still sell in the 40s (it actually bounced up in recent years!), so your AE120 won't really sell below 50 (typical band is 60k to 80k), so when you drive an AE140 as I do... and it is now worth 80k according to the insurance... where the heck is it going to go? Can't go down... it's propped up by all those popular models down there... :-)
