Thanks Plonkster but surely if you don't do the 50% SOC you should get away cheaper with 80% and 70% SOC. If you look at the cycle graph its not linear all the way

@plonkster Can you please put up the calculation you made for the Trojan T105 RE's (can't find the post with it) 48V 225Ah R20 000 Then say for the following 3 types of uses 80% SOC 4000 cycles 70% SOC 2750 cycles 50% SOC 1600 cycles

Most grid tied I know use batteries purely as backup. This is now if they have the others as you know die when the grid dies

Why should this be factored in when comparing running costs of the bank vs Eskom? You pay for electricity(80% SOC everyday) upfront for the next 11 years with a good set of batteries not for the next 22, so working in replacement costs should not be part of the equation here. I'm just heading out for a couple of hours will come and explain later on.

I agree with @KLEVA on this matter. Reasoning for this is I see the "better" batteries more like a "long" term investment than anything else Lets take what @plonkster calculated my Trojan T105 RE bank at (Think we worked out R2.34 per electricity unit) I'm running my bank to 80% SOC only for now so that's about 4000 cycles (10.9 years) I hope to get out of them. Now lets take a look at Eskom they increase on average around 10% every year. My prepaid rates will be the following amusing a 10% increase every year. So as you can see staying in block 1 and 2 for Eskom is my goal. Now the long term investment starts at year 4-5 as block 1 is still not to bad then but 2 starts getting to that magic number worked out earlier. Years 6 - 11 if I make it will be just the gravy as my batts will still be costing R2.34 a unit. Here you start saving up for the new bank again. If I delayed my purchase of the better batteries for later they would just be a higher price thanks to inflation and the cycle would work out the same just at a later stage. From now on it's just rinse wash repeat. If you think Eskom rates won't keep increasing then I say good luck to you.

Just a quote direct from the Trojan website "Many experts recommend that batteries be equalized periodically, ranging anywhere from once a month to once or twice per year. However, Trojan only recommends equalizing when low or wide ranging specific gravity (>0.030) are detected after fully charging a battery." http://www.trojanbattery.com/tech-support/battery-maintenance/ If I look at my system, batteries being discharged to +-80% SOC every night (70% deepest yet) for almost 8 months now. Keeping in mind that I have never equalized my bank before. Coincidentally I took gravity readings yesterday just before PV stops producing(bank 100%) yielded better readings than what Trojan recommends they should be at. I'm not saying you don't have to equalize but when you look after your batts you can get away without doing it that much.

From the Aus forum these are Jamicon caps. What would you suggest as a good replacement for them? (limited to 18mm diameter caps because of the board layout)

Like Chris said, those videos were made with the earlier revision of the inverter. If you look at the Aus forum you will see they did upgrade the DC side a bit later on.
