Ek gebruik 'n UN42, dis 'n fantastiese stukkie ingenieursvernuf in 'n besonderse klein pakkie...
Windows Pc Sticks

May 16, 20179 yr Some bloody nice small devices coming out lately. Why are they so expensive I wonder? The thing that caught my attention way back, with prices around R1500 - R1800, all in one device that has a screen, a battery built in, WiFi built in, onscreen kbd mouse, using the same power as a Pi if the screen is off, especially when I also get a built in camera to point to the devices that I can view them remotely (if I want), made tablets a no-brainer for me. You simply cannot get a Pi setup at that price range: Pi + PSU + SD card + case + fan + UPS = easily over R2k. Then you add a bigger external HDD, price goes up further. Any case, use it don't, each to our own personal convictions, I am all for small tablets / Pc Sticks.

UPS, run from inverter output, or get a DC-DC converter and run it from the batteries. IF you don't need an LCD you cannot really beat the Pi (Pishop has the Pi-zero now for under R100!). If you need the LCD, then the cheap tablets on the market make compelling arguments for your money.

Fans for when Pi's overheated due to where they where installed. HDD when they are used from more than just data reading, but also for downloading things - made a lot of sense. UPS for where they got damaged / SD card got damaged, when inverters switched of under excessive loads. Or when people forgot the Pi was on when they switched off the inverter.

Tablets can also overheat, especially if the CPU run high constantly and battery / charger can't keep up. Tablet have limited space as well, the cheaper ones much less than the nicer, and more expensive ones. So a HDD + added USB OTG adapter would be needed to download things I guess a UPS would be nice to have on a tablet as wellm especially after the battery stops working after 4, or so, years?
May 16, 20179 yr With mine, the solar app recording data does not affect the CPU. Even with other tasks, the small CPU idles. Wifi works lekker, one less wire. The 32gig hdd I have has 14gigs spare for "files" so every morning I copy them "files" over to the QNAP for "use" later. Portable USB HDD is an option, quicker to copy large files than via Wifi, for I have a 7 port non-powered USB hub connecting to said tablet to get to the 6 devices and HDD connected. As the tablet runs 24/7 off the 220v from inverter, the batt may last a long while and like with a laptop, towards batts end, if it just keeps it going got a few minutes to shutdown thereafter, one can get another year of so out of it? Once the batt goes, use it till the screen fails or HDD packs up or whatever happens. I recon 5 years easy.
May 17, 20179 yr I tell you, I don't understand how people manage to overheat an Rpi. It must be working in some seriously hostile environment or something. I've worked on three of these SBC things now, the CCGX (which is an ARM Cortex A8 Texas Instruments thing under the skin), the Beaglebone, and the Rpi. They don't need fans.
