Posted September 24, 20186 yr Not being a Solar expert by any means (at all really) I was wondering why anyone would choose a smaller yield solar panel over a larger one given the same dimensions? What am I missing (except perhaps budget)? Consulting my good friend Google I saw SunPower X-Series and E-Series panels have a 345W/327W panels with a great efficiency which is probably going to cost an arm and a leg. I have a future project (Grid Tied) with limited space and using the higher yield panels will produce the most power, right? What other good panels can you recommend with a +-1.5m x 1m size? Anything outside of these dimensions won't fit two rows of 5 I have space for. Ingo
September 24, 20186 yr Usually the 1.6m x 1m size are 60 cell panels and 72 cell panels are about 2m x 1m. I see the SunPower panels are 1.6 x 1.3m. So they have gone wider instead of longer.
September 24, 20186 yr I have 250W. Getting good power form it. But then what is important that I have a 45 - 90V DC inverter and 48V batteries. If your inverter is ex 90 - 100V larger would be better. It is best to mach your panels, batteries and input range of the inverter.
September 24, 20186 yr Author Ah, that is good information. As stated, the inverter will be grid-tied so battery voltage does not come in to the equation. Would the 'range' of the inverter refer to the nominal voltage? Values like MPP voltage range from 200V - 800V and Nominal of 710V is what the datasheet says. Would it then be to get the panels matched closely to 710V? From the datasheet 10 x SPR-E20-327 with Voc of 64.9V would be perfect? September 25, 20186 yr Depends what is available when being purchased. As example, when I brought my panels, 255W were available everywhere. 260W and up were only available in bulk quantities. Nowadays, 275W are available everywhere. Same with the 325W's.

I would look at the biggest wattage panels I could get. I saw 405w panels today. Why? The higher the volts, the better the grid tied inverter works ... and you have less mounting structures. September 26, 20186 yr Author That's what I thought as well. My limitation is space, then budget (wallet space :-)). 2m x 1m panels won't fit no matter what I do, it has to be as near as damn to 1.6m x 1m for me to fit 10 panels in to get +-3KW. Their E and X Series seems to fit one of my criteria but at a fairly large premium. The P Series would have been the choice was it not for size constraints.
