Growatt SPF5000 setting for SVolt

My Fellow Technocrats, please advise if anyone knows or could share what the correct BMS protocol on the growatt inverter will be for the SVolt 48 V batteries. Li mode on program 5 ranges from L01 to L99....not sure which option to use. Currently have 3 x SVolts in parallel with 3 x Growatts SPF5000.

Hi Guys,

Extreme newbie here and just had my Growatt SPF5000ES inverted installed with my SVOLT 48V 106Ah 5.09 kWh A-Grade Wall Mount Lithium Battery, my query is that when the installer selected option 5 and then chose Li the battery shows its charging 5A, if he changes to battery option USE then the charge rate changes to 60A. Not sure which is correct so I'm wondering if anyone has the similar setup and what setting they used?

Disclaimer: Installer was a family friend who helped me out so I can't fault them.

I had the same issue on my setup. Change LI protocol to 04 and that should go up to 95 A. Alternatively you can go to CAN - L52.

Yes.The other downside, in my case, is that LI BMS mode sets the charge and float voltages higher than recommended and this triggers OVP warnings on the BMS. I ended up opting for the USER2 mode and you can set your voltages and charge current.

@JoeMobstarr28Thanks for the reply sorry for not responding earlier been trying to finish up work stuff for year end ;-). I haven't fiddled with the setup since but noticed today after the helper used the iron the inverter threw off a Low voltage warning and cut off. (No loadshedding though so was using Eskom and not inverter so entirely sure this caused it.)Switched off mains, battery and inverter for a while and then powered battery and then inverter after the battery picked up charge the error 04 went away. It stayed on for an hour or so and then switched off again with low voltage error. Left the house on bypass and kept battery and inverter on so it could charge. Do you think the low charge rate (5A) could be an issue? When I switch to L04 the error comes up and the battery doesn't charge so a little stumped. Also after leaving it on for around 15\20 minutes the battery is now on 47v and 76% according to the Shine App.

Hi there

I had this problem( error 52- Low bus voltage) come up out of the blue. I was watching TV on a Sunday and then boom! Switched off everything, restarted the system and the error was cleared. Over the next three days, I noticed some strange behaviour, whenever the TV was switched on, without fail, ten minutes or so later the error popped up again and shuts everything down. Moved the TV to another location in the house and no issues, mind you, my system had been in operation for about ten months without any hassles. I reached out to Growatt and no response. This happened while I was using a smaller 2.4 kwh battery and since I was in the process of replacing it with the SVolt , I haven't encountered the error ever since, until a couple of days ago......I decided to test my 2200w lawnmower using solar and see how it would handle it. Error 52 popped up again! Really odd, because I can run most appliances without any hassles, even had an oops! moment when the kettle and microwave were on at the same time and that didn't trip up anything.

So yeah, can't really give you a solution and maybe some forum members with more knowledge and expertise might be able to assist.

This is not really strange as one can expect it with the lawnmower. This motor will draw a good up to 6 times 2.2kW which exceeds your inverter short term rating. This only while starting to turn. While the slip between blade turns(zero rpm) and frequency speed of 3000 rpm is at 100% the surge is at its highest. As the blade start turning gathering speed this slip would reduce and the current needed also reduces. It could also be even the new battery not being able to provide the power the lawnmower needs. 

When using a kettle and micro you don't have this surge and you stay below 5kW.

@Scorp007, Just as an example, today my garden Engineers working on my garden, here one can clearly see when he started the lawnmower. 6 Kw.

If I only had a 5 KW inverter would definitely trip.

Thanks for posting the actual. A picture says more than a 1000 words. 

Even with a 8kW inverter running normal house loads including some kitchen equipment I would not use a lawnmower on an inverter. In your case being in the electrical field for decades you know your system is capable of it but like you I would only do it with grid present.

@Scorp007 you are 100% correct. I would never put that kind of stress on my poor 5 Kw battery, when the garden engineer is here my system goes into SUB. in the picture one can clearly see that of the 6 KW 4.2 KWs are coming from the grid. The problem with lots of people with small solar systems is that they think they have a power station. Blame the trips on poor installations.

The lawnmower is one load I have never checked so here is my 1.9kw. At the time my house load was 330W. Thus starting load is about 5.1kW top reading and while mowing about 550-600W. Yes my lawn was cut a week ago so more like trimming. 

The extra 22A causes a 5V drop at my DB.

Hi I have the similar setup, L52.....036.

And charge current it sets itself through BMS. Do experience the inverter switch on and off for few seconds and if it reset itself. Or maybe my inverter is faulty

Restart is a setting. Restart on overload, restart on overtemp. Check what your loads were when it restarted.

Good evening All,

I have finally managed to play around with my settings on the inverter. So just some additional background. With my Growatt set to battery type Li and option 5 the battery every few days drops a bar without any load being applied (not sure if its the inverter drawing its power from the battery) but whats also interesting or weird is that without any load the inverter would go into error 04 and then switch of eventhough the battery is not low.

I have reached out to the reseller and they say i should use the settings for the Svolt 48v/5.09kwh battery which is :

Bulk Charger Voltsge/V: 54

Floating Charge : 52.5

Discharge Cut off coltage: 43.5

Max Charge: 100

There is 2 types of user defined settings: USE & USE 2 ( Manual says for lithium batteries without BMS)

Any ideas which I should use and if setting it to user defined will help with my battery losing charge without any load?

You can use either.
Only difference really is the preset values that will be applied when you select it.
USE mode applies generic Lead Acid battery voltages and charge values.
US2 applies generic LiFe values.  You will have to set all your parameters after applying either.
I have tested both although I run mostly Li-BMS protocol. 
The only real difference that I have noticed, and that is not consistent either, is that in USE mode, once your batteries are 100% they tend to stay at 100%, whilst in Li mode the Growatt algorithm starts the discharge by powering the Inverter from battery until the battery hits 95% at which stage it starts to charge again.
Apply US2 and set your battery specs manually and monitor.

@leelazarusI have my system running on US2 for close to three years and happy with the results. I actually like it that way as I can control charge voltage Etc...

as @zsde says in the comment above you must make sure you set you voltage parameters as per Battery OEM recommendation.

Parameter 19 bulk charge voltage, parameter 20 Float voltage, also very importante its parameter 2 charging current, set it as per OEM recommendation I charge mine quite a bit lower that the OEM value. Still get my battery to full charge by about 11:00 AM.

@leelazarus First I have to admit I'm at home all day.

I have an excellent custom-made monitoring system where I can basically see every single live value from my system.

Using it, I managed to find the optimum charging value on my battery pertaining to cell voltage and cell temperatures. Obviously depending on weather conditions. There are days that are a bit overcast I may increase the charging current.

My battery is a 5 KW LBSA, OEM recommends charging at 40 Amps, charging voltage to 56 V and float at 54 V

I charge it at 25 Amps, bulk charging voltage 55.6 V, float 53.5 V. by about 11:00 AM the battery is showing 100 % SOC at 55,6 V and I float at 53. 5 V at that voltage my 16 cells are at resting voltage of 3.32 V  I Found these to be the best settings for my battery.

Today I reduced the charging voltage to 55 V and I got it to 96%
