Hi everyone,

as part of my studies in mech. engineering I'm designing a conversion kit to use old wind pumps for electricity production. For this I need detailed information on the gearbox assembly, like dimensions of the shafts, gears and housing.

Has anyone old manuals, technical specifications or drawings lying around or would be willing to take some pictures and measurements on their wind pump? I'm especially interested in the Stewarts and Lloyds Climax models and would hugely appreciate any help.

I will post the building plans and results after testing here and on instructables.com.

Here you can find one of the gear ratios as well as discussions around the design.

Thanks, I know that website. They mainly discuss their new gearbox design. I need specific dimensions of the old gearboxes to build a CAD model and design some parts like a bracket for the generator etc.

With so many 1000's of there units still standing idle would it not just be easier to strip a windmill and get every minute detail required.

May be even a forum member with the head gear on a farm. We do have a number of farmers on the forum.

Yes, that would be the first choice. I saw a similar topic by DeepBass9, who was interested in converting his wind pump and posted a screenshot of a gearbox schematic.

Sadly I can't go take the measurements myself since am planning the project from Germany, where I study. But if all goes to plan installation and testing will be in Namibia in September.

We typically just use the old wind pump tower and fit a Modern Wind turbine on top of it saves a lot of costs and lots of effort.

The wind pump towers are very strong and you can go quote large on the turbine you install on it.

Trying to work on gearboxes and gear ratios etc is just too much effort and you lose a lot of potential energy due to frictional losses etc.
