Just got back to Joburg, was in Drakensberg for the week. I noticed that nearly all the little rondavels in the farms I drove past had a solar panel. Good to see solar energy is being used where council is not available.

I had never seen a PV panel mounted onto a thatch roof rondavel but there is a first time for everything.

Back to the drawing board, the more I read the more questions I have!

 

So if a GTI feeds 220v AC power into your homes wiring, what happens if the GTI is generating 500w from PV but the load of the house is 2000w?

Will the GTI keep feeding the 500w into the houses wiring and then allow council to add the required 1500w to carry the 2000w load... or will the GTI stop feeding power into your houses wiring and have council supply the 2000w?

 

 

Grid tie sits on the mains sync'd to mains and simply adds to the mains. If less grid fills the gap if making more the surplus backfeeds into the grid.

I am on a post paid smart meter, would I be able to feed back into the grid and spin this meter backwards? Or does your inverter have a function which can measure the load and match the PV input to it, that way not feed any power back to the grid? I dont want to get nailed by Eskom and be charged for every kWh I feed back in.

I couldnt help but notice the fans for cooling on the inverter, do they run when inverting from DC (PV or Batt) to AC like my Axpert does? I always worry about these fans failing.

Maybe I am just paranoid!

Complex issue this.

1. Old meters, can run backwards.

2. Old meters with reverse lock-up. Won't trip if you run backwards, but won't give you credit either.

3. Prepaid meters that can't see the direction of power flow and bill you for what you push back.

4. Prepaid meters that can detect reverse flow and will trip if you do it.

5. Prepaid meters that can be configured to allow reverse flow (And acount for it, etc, in other words a smart meter, with various levels of smart).

If you have a smart meter, you may find it wasn't provisioned to allow reverse flow.

The Conlog BEC23 meter so many of us have fits into category 5: It's just smart enough to be a problem :-)
