Bicycle dynamo - is it worth it?

Featured Replies

I have a bicycle and an indoor trainer. Would it be worth it to rig up a dynamo to the sunsynk aux port? It would work like a wind turbine, but powered by pedaling. I might train a bit more if I saw $ returns!

Google doesn't show much, except for 100w versions, which isn't worth the effort and cost.

Worth it, or file 13?

Novel idea :)

But I think I can make more than 26.9c an hour with my time :)  100w per hour ? 1000w from Eskom R2.69?

One may be better off bitcoin mining :) or adding some panels for money spent making / buying the dynamo ?

Isn’t AUX for AC power?

Yes. But you can connect a micro inverter to it. Technically its possible with the dynamo but I would rather get a wind turbine connected to the bicycle if you really want to try this.

Doing the quick maths on a quick google search for wind turbines - assuming you can spin it at full capacity, call it 1500 minimum hours to break even just on the wind turbine.

Happy to move this one to file 13, just not worth it.

worth it?

I'd say it depends on the person. financially probably not, but coolness factor.. HELL YEAH!

I mean, who would not want to say they are saving money by cycling in the morning or afternoons. Personally I think this is an awesome novel idea, just the enjoyment of doing the setup, and then seeing your cycling contributing to your power supply.

If i was a cycler i would jump on this like a rash :)
