I always enjoy a good free energy video, the ones with the fans in the background, or hidden battery terminals or whatnot. Of course its junk, but sometimes the videos that come suggested aren't bad. My latest tryouts are low temp differential sterling engines, this lead me to dig out a lot of usa doe and nasa research from around 1976- 1986 on sterling engines. These look cool as desk ornaments, and run just fine on your morning coffee. Another was the Mendocino Motor, not much use, or even practical, but again looks cool, and if you really want a fan that doesn't use grid power. The hydraulic ram pump featured as well, not bad if you've got the running water and a bit of height. An odd one actually in use is the archimedes screw pump generator, weirdly it seems to be big in japan. Again it works, you need running water though. water desalination using solar and without the crazy brine concentration. I do have an iron flow design that in the works, and which likely wont break the bank, Its very much in its infancy, so no promises, eta's or details on anything here atm. I also found time to fit in a bit of astrophotography, but that's still a work in progress.

There are plenty of "new" battery chemistry's coming out atm, even a few old one's are making a comeback (Lithium Iron), seems everyone's getting in on it (and their cousin). My view is its a very good thing, many wont make it past the lab stage, a lot seem promising, if overly complicated in conception. My favourite atm is the iron flow battery, the basic components are in great supply worldwide, non toxic, zero degradation over 20,000 cycles. The battery is made of iron salt and water. So also super cheap to manufacture, recycling is a breeze. if used in ev's an interesting concept is "charging" will simply involve "swopping" out your electrolyte rather than charging as we know it, making the process much quicker in theory. whether it will make it into ev's is an entirely different conversation. It's currently being put into grid size installations, so also out of the lab and into the field, with specs and performance that have convinced the guys that sign the checks to go ahead with them, rather big checks. From what I can tell, the trick will be to create a cost effective small form factor home size edition, 10kw-30kw, at the moment they come in 40ft containers. In the next 5 - 10 years, my view is main stream home energy storage will have some kind of flow, and not just electrons either.

dont forget the radiation to and from the cell tower, we're rapidly heading towards 5g/6g phones as well, and all that right in your pocket.

One of the better performing lifepo4 cells at lower temps, 25c is the sweet spot, others can get ugly at 0 and less I'll post a temp vs C charge/discharge rate tomorrow here, it applies to these cells only though, but its an indicator at least.

guessing would be battery's placed right next to next other with little to no spacing, 1 develops a bad cell, short circuits, heat builds up fast, transfers said heat to the surrounding (were good ?) battery's, cascade effect, possibly in a room with no ventilation, add a spark and a boom. I had a 200ah sla with a bad cell, the heat coming off it was actually quite substantial, dangerous in fact.

perhaps try out watchpower on your pc with 3m usb cable, see if it establishes comms. this step checks whether the axpert board is working with usb or not. if watchpower establishes comms continue here : it may be driver on your pi os, or some similar setting. also try a os update on the pi, should be a ubuntu flavor, steps can be googled, and maybe a also a forced file system check upon reboot, again the steps can be googled, sometimes the flash memory needs a file system check. if watchpower doesnt establish comms, continue here : options then become replacing the chip yourself, or sourcing a local/ebay replacement board. Almost any cell phone repair shop with soldering station (I always keep one handy for small fiddly ad hoc soldering jobs I don't feel like doing myself) can replace the chip for you for cheap (around R150) while you wait, just pop into a electronics supply shop first (phone ahead to check on stock) for the replacement part first. Extra info below : keep in mind usb doesnt like long distances 9m tends to be the max without some kind of intervention, try keep the cable to around 3m during testing, if longer is needed, pickup a usb extender from matrix with appropriate length ethernet cable, these usually go up to 30m-50m as needed. also try serial comms with watchpower if the usb fails, it may just be the chip on the board in the axpert. the usb on the axpert is a serial to usb chip anyway, you'll need a usb to serial pc converter and actual serial cable for this. Cost around R270 for both at matrix. phone ahead to check on stock. This should cover all the bases and get comms going again. Failing all options, including sourcing a replacement, I know the axpert repairer of a major importer, if needed you can get in contact with him, great guy actually.

they're almost all dodgy in the fine print, and you'll need system data daily over warranty period to prove you didn't exceed (insert variable here) spec, its really a case of guilty till proven innocent with the warranty's

Morning everyone, How about a nice manufacturer warranty vs roi comparison, warranty's will be as published by the manufacturer, this will be on cell cycles only, so monetary values can be established per unit stored over the period of the warranty. Focus will be 5kw units. 10 year warranty on the paintjob isn't really a factor worth considering imo, hence cells only. I'll use this as a placeholder as I get the info together. I'll also put some cell testing procedures i have on hand in, its actually quite interesting but please note not every cell manufacturer does this, or makes the data available. its worth also noting different cells have different performance graphs at lower temps, I'll put in 2 examples for comparison. warranty info presented will include diy or authorized installer installation required, and any other installation nuances as may be required to uphold the warranty.

I can only apologize. even went to extent of seeking the advise of the best minds in the business, access to the best equipment possible, Hubble excluded. there's really no explanation. the posted examples weren't up to expected quality, please don't judge on those. I'll do the roi however, its best everybody knows the actual cost per unit stored and used per warranty on their batts. in addition, lithium cell tests will be included as I have them, these are lab tests but may be applicable to real world results.

How about a roi analysis across the brands, regardless of chemistry used but based on the warranty's so price per unit stored across the life time of the battery's per brand. Hopefully it make up for my astrophotography images, I'll put a few together tomorrow.

I like Lithium graphene cells, 10,000 cycles. I also like my lithium torch, with solar panel built in, its kinda cool, even charges my cell phone if I ever needed it, and goes 10 hrs on a single charge. on a totally unrelated side note, please please read the warranty's on your li ion battery's, most don't cover more than 3,500 cycles or 5 years on cells, 10 years goes back to 3,500 cycles, one cycle per day. The above came up in a question asked of me on local warranty's from most local brands, its really quite limited. Happy to paste the results, but its not good news. also watching iron flow battery's, I believe they're the next big thing in home energy storage. Lithium iron is also making a comeback due to patents expiring this year. So keep an eye out for that.

in this case, everything but everything was done by the book, approved installer, owner didn't touch anything or interfere with settings. manufacturer consulted at every turn, before the battery went in for repair, so it goes on. I'm sure there are very good experiences out there however, I'm only mentioning a particularly trying one which doesn't indicate a trend, merely a singular indicator at best. So yes, under all circumstances ensure your warranty is upheld under any and all circumstances in which you operate, regardless of market.

they all lie, in full disclosure I've been assisting bobster since nov/dec with his 2.5 yr old battery install. I've never ever seen so many tricks being pulled out to deflect blame/claim ever, and its under a 10 yr warranty btw. No I didn't install it, or had anything to do with it really, except provide guidance on getting the warranty fulfilled and in depth knowledge so he wasn't getting the wool pulled over his eyes, its still going on. At least its finally coming to some kind of closure though, every step included challenging the stated data, the current stance at the time. You'd think it was a international negotiation. I can only say, you think you have a warranty until you try and get it actioned, then every excuse comes out under the sun. yes its a good, well known, locally supported brand.

I was trying to say though, that cells in any battery can be replaced if it comes to it, and they aren't immediately trash the second a cell gives out.

I'm aware, he must have had a really really good reason, and I always enjoy a good story decided to assume it was far more important than some blowout with Eskom, hence the business suggestion.

thats crazy for a home install, I bet there's a story there, one of those over the top types, ending with "I'm never using Eskom again!!!" alternatively its a plot/farm and there's a business running there which explains it easily.

Another possible focus point is retrofitting of of these to your geyser. Cost is R7200, works even on most cloudy days (uses uv), pick one that suits your water needs 10-30 tubes versions are available. A great way to implement these to to add a secondary tank (empty 200L geyser), the tube collector heats the secondary tank up, which acts as a buffer between the tube collector and the main geyser. As hot water is used in the main geyser, a circulation pump tops up the main geyser from the buffer storage tank. The result is the main geyser stays at temp with additional hot water transfer typically taking minutes.

And here I was thinking of making one, but pointing out its been done before I'll order this one so long, let you know how it goes on day/night and morning coffee working, see about scaling it up. if your icc/icm gives issues, set the pi for file system check on reboot. its a common problem with flash memory.
