great point or idea bobster, having worked on the old Pukke or north west PBMR project on their micro model simulation project while finishing my studies, i can vouch that nuclear is by far the cleanest and safest form of energy generation (or atleast was when we did the research now more than ten years ago... i doubt it has changed much), but most of the tree huggers have NO sense or idea of how these plants actually work, and the technology behind it...  actually neither how the normal coal or gas fired plants work either, so why comment on something you have no idea on... i think if memory serves, the report i saw last year (wife is senior electrical engineer involved with the eskom woes, so all reports and data is courtesy of her work etc etc), nuclear was still the safest way to generate power per megawat generated with either hydro or wind being the the most dangerous (think about it,it normally goes wrong during installation, less casualties during the actual plant builds since it is not such a harse environment when compared to a hydro or wind turbine installation where guys are working at heights etc with lots of risks.... just google the wind farm installations to see how the big blades gets installed and how easily it goes pear shaped... and the safety or casualty rate is determined per megawatt generated over the rated or planned life of the system vs the casualties incurred during operation and installation!)
 
Even solar is not that great when considering the entire carbon footprint since the manufacturing process behind these is not great, albeit improving all the time atleast... i hate these so called people who is environmentally conscious but actually have not idea what it is actually about..... and just sprout their own ignorance and crap as far and loud as they possibly can..... they normally cloud the judgement of people still forming their own opinions.....

Does your system trip while eskom is present....? Almost sounds that way when you describe it... it is def not supposed to do that.... i have the same inverter.... did not split my backup and essential loads... not in the traditional sense, i have the entire db loaded on the main supply side of the inverter, and the backup as well, switching with a manual changeover, i have never had the inverter reset or trip when used on the back up side if the grid is off, you can on the one had easily do it, but also if doing things responsibly it can actually be quite hard ( i am in similar setup to yours, having gas stove etc, solar geyser, with those few removed it becomes hard to max out the inverter's 4.6kw backup side....)
 
If grid is present it is supposed to supplement what the pv or battery cannot provide at any given stage,  no matter what the load is, it will just add from the grid, or that is how i understood it always... might be something else wrong with your setup... and also to bobsters point, if the actual inverter trips, then it should only be about 2 mins, since the inverter basically reboots before power is back on, if a trip then happens in short succession then is is a longer period, i think like 15 mins or something before power is restored since the inverter has an internal mechanism to protect itself from overheating when overloaded.... the little i can add.....
 
 

@gbyleveldt sorry to hear about your issues, i bought four goodwe inverters, two em, and two es models, the two es worked perfect from the word get go, so did the one em, the other one was a disaster from the start. I did all 4 installations myself, not rocket science to be honest, although as soon as i had issues with the one it was a issue that i did the install myself, eventhough i am way better qualified than most installers probably with all due respect.... anyway, long story short, struggled for weeks with segen, it was a nightmare, their service is k@k, excuse the french, no other way to put it though, i only made headway once i contacted china directly, they gave me a local contact for a chinese man who assisted me who had the problem sorted in one morning, after struggling for weeks with segen solar... blaming and faulting everything possible except the actual issue... i still have the gentlemans details should you ever need proper support.....
 
hope you issues are now sorted, having unfortunately bought a 5kw axpert unit as well, i can say the difference between the brands is night and day.... if the goodwe works i find it to be a great inverter, when compared to the likes of the axpert, i have an offgrid installation with sunnyboys and even prefer the goodwe over them in terms of ease of installation and function etc etc....
 
seems like the sunsync is also a great offering at the moment though.... just wondering how their build quality compares to the goodwe... the goodwe really seems like solid equipment.....

so out of interest, i reinstalled and changed all the piping to the sans alternative installation over the weekend... works 100% without changing any of the hardware... still not sure why the supplier would give an installation option that does not work... happy it is sorted however... thanx to everyone who exchanged ideas and took the time to comment and help problem solve.... thanx guys.... had a few hot solar showers this week... works perfect now....

geez sorry man.... then it is inferior grammar or spelling is it not... english is only my third language... cut me some slack, after coca cola normally most of my english is done for the day... so pardon the ignorance, i wasn't trying to be impolite... 🙂
 
p.s. most people from potchefstroom only encounter English during their adolescence the first time.... 😉
