Looking for a smallish mains frequency counter to monitor grid frequency ? Has anyone come across one 

Yes, you can buy one from ACDC. If the branch does not have stock, ask them to order it for you. It will arrive in couple of days.

I found this one https://www.acdc.co.za/products/frequency-digital-panel-meter-3-digit-100-240v-72x72x48mm?variant=30475711244 . However cannot find any meaningful specs on it . How does it display 50.1 Hz for instance ? 501 , 50.1 , or 50 .  Datasheet here does not say http://storage-download.googleapis.com/spec/DHC3P-HZ.pdf

I have this one from ACDC. It’s the cheapest but only displays whole numbers. 

 

Never saw that one , but I need at least another decimal point , hoping the Rhomberg  DHC7P-HZ or DHC8-HZ will do so.

Their website is very bad for finding items. The best is to go inside a branch and look at their paper catalog. 

I have a couple of the ACDC,  square faced panel meters (pl-ad101-22vahzs) which indicates V, A and Hz. It works very well but the Hz  meter only shows full numbers and I've never seen any of them showing anything other than 50Hz even running off my inverter generator.

This would be pretty normal. I have not seen a Freq below 49.7 or over 50.3Hz. This grid as a whole is pretty stable.

I doubt that you will ever see 49 or 51Hz.

If it's a one time check you want, you can buy a multimeter with Hz function.
