Vaal reacted to Steve87 in Damage on solar systems due to mismatched components.Hi hope I don't qualify as a "bakkie-brigader" however, I think this article may have a good intention but the explanation is a bit inaccurate.
I have seen this arguement being had a lot and once again it's a little lack of what is the actual risk. What is risky here ? The MPPTs are a DC driven device. It extracts power by the product of Voltage and Amps. What is the limitation to observe the Volts or the amps and what happens to either if you exceed them??
The MPPT will have a 500V max voltage for example. If you go and connect enough panels in series like 10 in series at 52V per panel (520V) you will exceed the raw voltage input & the MPPT can be damaged.
Let's say there is a amperage total expressed as 11A on the MPPT. What happens if I use a 550W JA Mono panel rated at 52V per panel Voc and Imp at 14A. What will happen to a string length of 8 panels??
A lot of ppl and probably the author of that article believes that we ok in the Voltage range because 52V x 8panels = 416V total. So voltage is GOOD. What about the current? They believe the MPPt will blow and get damaged because the panels at Max power current will deliver 14A and fry the MPPT. This is grossly incorrect!! The MPPT will drink 11A from the panels because that's all it needs. It won't kill itself trying to get drunk.
If someone including this author feels anything differently let's try to compare logic if not science. You have a 5kWh or 100ah battery attached to this same inverter. It's rated battery max input current draw is 100A. If I attached another 5kWh (100ah) battery to this is parallel what will happen?? Everyone knows the inverter doesn't blow up. However if you connect them in series to get 100V you have a problem and will damage the inverter.
Some ppl mock the humble Bakkie Brigader, however, there are some basic fundamentals that need to be understood before we point fingers.
Now we can argue further that there will be losses with the 550W panel because it will never reach full rated power and I agree with that. The 460W panel is a better fit because it has 11A Imp rating. But let's just say the message to pass on is that poorly integrated equipment can cause damage and losses in production but the fear mongering of ppl saying the amps will damage the MPPTs is just a camp fire story.
Sorry to be a pain but even an electrical engineer at a Multi million rand project wanted me to connect an Atess inverter at 1100V. The max MPPT voltage is 1000V and the MPPT range is 450V to 800V. I was carrying out the commissioning & I refused. So the moral of this story is that Solar is a relatively new technology and a lot of operators/ installers/ electrical engineers/ Bakkie Brigaders and plumbers know what they are doing and a lot don't know. I couldn't care less the title of the person, we don't all know the same things neither do we have the same experience levels.

Vaal got a reaction from Demo in My solar rabbit holeIf you can get a second geyser and put it in series with the morning used one. Then you only heat that geyser with solar power on a timer or home assistant. Your main geyser gets supplied with hot water from the second geyser.
A second geyser is a lot cheaper than a heat pump.
Is it really necessary to bath? A shower uses a lot less water and elec, especially if you use a low flow shower rose. My next house will not have a bath in.
Personally I feel that a shower cleans me better than a bath, because my dirty water is running down the drain and I'm not laying in it. And I don't have to clean the bath after use. LoL

Not to get involved in Municipality BS I buy as little as possible 50 to 80 units every month during summer months and build up the units for the winter. jy kan iemand lekker laat moer vir 12k

Vaal got a reaction from Thunderdolt in Earth Leakage tripping on off grid systemQuestion time:
Is your EL between your inverter and the load? It must be after your inverter, it is not there to protect your inverter.
What type of EL do you use and how old is it? I found a CBi type B EL/RCD gives zero nuisance trips, they are expensive but worth it.
You say the EL keeps on tripping even with all the breakers are tripped? Then the fault carries through on the neutral circuit.
Do you have access to a meggar?
Are there any elec motors on the circuit? Motors and old fluorecent ballasts have a tendancy to can become a bit of a problem.
Faultfinding: If the EL is currently tripping:
REMOVE /UNPLUG all the plugs and try to switch on. Still tripping:
Switch off the main supply and all the breakers, disconnect all the black wires on the neutral bar, switch power back on, don't switch on the individual breakers, reset EL, now push the black wires one by one against the neutral bar.
If the EL trip you have found the possible culprit circuit then you have to see what is all on that circuit.
If the EL still doesn't trip you might have a couple of small earth leakings which all then ads up to become more than the allowded total trip rating of 30mA.
NB the power is on in the db as you are pushing the black wires against the bar, do not electrocute yourself.
If you don't feel up to it, please get outside professional help. It is a pain in the ..... to find a dissappearing earth fault.
Happy hunting.

Vaal got a reaction from Scorp007 in Dyness BX51100 batteries won't charge past 48% (Deye 8K Inverter)May I suggest that you get a decent couple of fused isolators with correct rated DC fuses, like a Keto / Jean Muller.
The way I understand is that every battery must have its own fuse isolator and then 1 where all the batteries combine.
What size and length is the battery cables?

Vaal got a reaction from Gavin van Dam in New SOLAR adopterWhy don't you use any battery power during night time? It looks like your setup is more as a ups for loadshedding and not to save max money.
What battery do you have ? Because a working (regularly used, but not abused) battery is a happy battery.

Vaal got a reaction from JacoG in Optimal settings for Synsynk 5kw + 2 x 5.32 Sunsynk batteries during winter in the Western CapeWhat does you solar production graph look like on a average day?
I have a 5kw SS, 5kw Hubble batt and 5.3kw north facing array.
We use about 2kw of grid power per day because I'm a bit low on batt capacity. It would be nice to have another batt but at 2 units a day it is not economically viable.
I take my batt down to 33% soc and use about 200w in the morning, the rest is used during the evening to keep the batt at 80% till 23h00 after that it drains down to 33%. Base load is about 200>400w.

Vaal got a reaction from SwitchVanDam in How to Stagger start loadsNb please be careful of starting a refrigiration compressor when it is still under pressure.
If a compressor was running and is switched off and on in a short time, it tries to start against back pressure and the compressor can be damaged.
To stagger the restart I'll suggest you get a couple of different Refrigiration Surge protector plugs. They have a restary time delay of between 2 to 5min .
I know the Clearline have a 5 min, my Ellies one has 2 minutes and the Safy Volt I supplied to a friend was 3 minutes. Your fridge will love you for using this device. LoL
If you can go to a supplier and ask them to test different models to see what delay they have because sometimes different units of the same supplier have n little different time delays.
First test 1 and see if it is fast enough to catch your power dip or surge.

I was told it must have a 20/40kA rating with a IEC spec number. And it must protect the N also. Have you seen what is in the cheap spd's? A simple MOV between L & earth and N & earth.

Vaal got a reaction from Jeppe in Who is 100% off grid in Cape TownFor me to save average of 2kw grid consumption per day, will cost met about R30k + in extra battery expense. I dont think its worth it for me. But when the grid is down I can switch of 1 fridge and move its contents into the other. Then we"ll be 99.9% there.
Have we as humans got so used to all the luxuries that we cannot make 1 or 2 small sacrifices when the shtf? I wonder.

Vaal got a reaction from Oelof in Weird spikes in power usage during the nightElimination of possibilities: it would be best to switch off one device at a time. Start with your geyser switched off at the db board. Then after that you can switch off the circuit breaker to the kitchen, then the out buildings etc.
You possibly know what your sverage battery soc is lets say at 23h00, if you switch a circuit off and see a drastic change you might have a better idea of you cause. Happy hunting.
