January 17, 20233 yr people comparing lead-acid and lithium based on total kWh is always flawed - if you don't account for total lifecycles, DoD etc., lithium will always look overpriced. "No one in their right mind should invest close to R120k into something that will lose all its value in 20 years." dead 😂

"No one in their right mind should invest close to R120k into something that will lose all its value in 20 years." dead 😂 Consider this R120K invested in a bank let's say at 7% interest= R8.4000/ per year, in my case my R100K investment at the current electricity price is saving me an average of R900.00 a month X 12 = just over R10,000.00. I score +- R2000 plus the cherry on top of the cake---- no more load shedding.
January 19, 20233 yr Avoiding replying to that thread, with the hair-pulling going on. The sheer peace of mind alone, from having almost no issues with load shedding, makes it worth the cost to get a decent solar setup. While the doomsday-prophets are spitting and shouting, I'm running my household and not stressing about potential appliance failures anymore.
January 19, 20233 yr It's just a matter of priorities. I know a guy that tells me he can't afford solar, yet he drives a Ford Everest. I prefer driving my Toyota Yaris and not worrying about load shedding.
January 20, 20233 yr The problem there is that too many folks are talking about "lithium" like it's one thing. Somebody is complaining about having to spend 40K on "lithium". Well that's too much if you're buying a 12V 100ah drop-in, but good if you're buying 200ah at 50V, nicely packaged and with CAN comms to the inverter. It's funny how our minds make this error: Talk to people about "solar" and the same thing happens. Very few of us grasp up front that there's no one thing called "solar", that systems need to be sized according to requirement and that requirements will vary from household to household. it is, of course, possible to give ball park figures, based on average monthly consumption and with some assumptions built in (sufficient north facing roof, geysers and stove to not be backed up), but that still shouldn't be taken as final. Your logic is fine but what you have forgotten is the your investment will only yeild around 4% after the taxman has taken his share. The case becomes less simple when you have to go to your bank manager for a loan to finance the R120k.

Though we don't do this with cars, certainly by the time we're young adults.
January 20, 20233 yr I see my solar system in the same way that I see my car. Yes it will be cheaper to walk/take a taxi or bus/bum lifts, but it will be less convenient. So I decide to spend a lot of money up front to get my own car and be independent, even though it is a depreciating asset that will be worth nothing in 20 years. Similarly, I might not save myself rich with my solar system, but I decide to spend a lot of money on it because it is more convenient than to have load shedding.
