  • So I Bought R600 of power today through Standardbank banking app.   R300 went to services so they did collect the arrears on services from Aug in Sep. R345 incl Vat. Then I got 93.

  • I never bought in July. I bought R400 in August to test and the R230 from July did not carry over. I received my 62.5 units

How did you buy the token?

I bank with FNB, and I buy using their app on my phone. I get a detailed breakdown of the purchase, on the app and via SMS. But other folks in my area buy at supermarkets and they report getting a slip that, in your case, would say they paid R300 for 46.9 units. Those folks can't believe the increase the City has imposed on them.

So it seems to me that some vendors have made a better job of this than others.

That receipt you got is plain wrong. Makes no mention at all of VAT, which they are required to.

I buy via FNB website - just find it more convenient.
The App does not allow me to select saved meter numbers for multiple meters.

I tried to buy through the website last night, but it didn't give me an option to input the amount I wanted to buy. There were just selections from a drop down. Annoyingly there was R300 and there was R500, but I couldn't buy for R400.

App & Website need a bit of "improvement".

I go to the Purchase History -> Select the previous purchase on that meter -> Buy Again
That jumps to Once-Off-Purchase with the meter number already filled in -> Flexi Recharge.

Strange (annoying) that the Flexi Recharge is only on the Once-Off Purchase menu.

I did not have sufficient units go go through the whole of Aug and not buy any units 😞

05 Aug I had 75 units.

26 Aug it had dropped down to 9 units.

So I bought R200 on the Banking app.

R100 went to service fees.
R100 went to units 31.30 units.

Will buy more on the 2 Sep  for R600 to see if they charge R200 service fee or R300 (for the short fees of Aug.)

if they dont charge for fees in the previous month I am thinking of buying bulk and saving the R200 a month fees.

if they do charge for the arrears fees then to get 100units to get me through the month will cost R500.

My mate didnt top up for July and August and bought R500 today.

He was charged R250 fees plus VAT so R287.50 of charges.

So he got 78.2kwh for the remaining R212.50.

I havent bought yet but it seems like there is some sort of accumulation of fees unfortunately.

so it does not save you money to buy in Bulk every 6 months as they will eat you money for the fees.

So I need 120 units a month and that incl fees will now cost me R555.20 (R4.62 / unit) if you include the service fees in the units.

No way to get 120 units without them getting their cut...

seems like I should get another battery and disconnect from City Power 😞

Sunsynk Batt R24 000 - save R555 a month so payback is 3.6 years.......

if you can disconnect from City Power..... ( i have a Gennie for Bad days 😉   )

  • 1 month later...

So we are starting to see how the City is applying the R200 fee and what happens if you don't buy every month.

Two of my neighbours were upset this month when they got a deduction of R400 instead of the R200 that was deducted last time they bought. In both cases  they bought a lot in September, didn't buy anything at all in October. Now they buy this month and R400 gets taken off the purchase amount and the balance is used for VAT and actual units.

They seem to have thought that the R200 was levied per purchase. It is levied per calendar month, and so because they didn't buy last month they are now in arrears and the City has hit them for the R200 for this month plus the arrears amount.

They didn't get disconnected, though I guess that at some point that process would have kicked in.

Another thing.... when you make your purchase, check the message/receipt very carefully. You are looking for the words "Key Revision Number". This should be a 2. I found it in the app on my phone that I use to buy (but not in the SMS).

If the KRN isn't 2 then you urgently need a TID update or you will not be able to load units after the 24th of this month.

If you have KRN=1 then go to City Power (don't phone them, go to your nearest City Power branch) and be sure you have the serial number of the meter with you. You don't need to take in the meter, they just need the serial number.
