When you say VM what is the host operating system then ? Are you using desktop or ESX ?

I used my windows 10 pc with wmware workstation to test but I think if windows 10 does not detect it the underlying vm will also not detect it.

I am out of ideas for now.

Maybe I need to try linux but will need to find a laptop for it first.

When you look in device manager what do you see under ports ?

The problem is windows device manager detect the usb as an unknown device(device descriptor failed) so I don't even see a com port on device manager.

I am starting to think the com port might be bust. This really sucks. I tried almost everything I found on google but still no luck.

A bit of a roundabout test, but if you have the stomach...

1. Boot with a Linux rescue disk and see if it is picked up as /dev/ttyUSB0 (or perhaps /dev/ttyACM0, depending on what usb class it chooses to emulate).

2. Linux + Virtualbox. Install windows inside the virtual host. Map the serial port (which is hopefully correctly detected) onto COM1. See if the windows software will work with COM1.

In my case (the device is a little arm-cortex based computer) has an integrated ftdi usb-serial device that refused to work on windows, but worked fine on linux. When I mapped it onto COM1, the software (our software) worked at the lower speeds (up to 115kbaud2) but failed at 3mbaud. Yes... we use 3mbaud... ftdi can go up to 12 :-)

Sounds to me like a driver issue. Remove the "unknown device" and hit refresh and see if it is picked up again and if asked for a driver.

I had an old prolific usb to com port laying around plug it into my win pc and it detects it correctly, unfortunately I cant use it because the inverter only has a usb input so I would guess that it used some sort of usb to serial board inside. I am leaning more towards the part that the USB com port on the inverter is busted.

Andries, are you close to Bellville, Cpt?

Nee man, wat soek jy daar? :D Dis ANC wereld.

Seriously, do you have a IT buddy, to provide a 2nd opinion for you? It could be a faulty port, it could be drivers, faulty inverter port, it could be small.

if you don't, give Alecia a call at http://www.theitmanager.co.za/, tell her someone from Bellvile, Cape Town sent you. :D

See, sorted.

Next? :D

Hate to see people sukkeling and getting frustrated, losing faith, if help is around the corner.

You have my stuff Andries. If you would like me to have a look just shout. Will bring my lappie along as well if need be.

I am in Faerie Glen just across the road. I gym at the Faerie Glen gym every morning. I can stop buy with my e-bike or do a Teamviewer session.

But its up to you.

cheers

Ag you know, comes par for the course. seeing as here in Cape Town we voted the right way and all that, comes naturally to sort problems for all ... :D:D:D

No seriously been on forums for many years and have seen this all a lot, so having been there, done that ... receiving and having paid it forward parts, it works well.

And people can then help face to face, and not just from a keyboard.

But, back to your question, how can I help ... mmmmm ... now that I think about it, you know Chris, I have the same need. Also need a once over, okay, maybe a twice over.

then i think ... Karoo plaas, vars lug, braaivleis, bietjie ... road trip!!!!? :D

Lets see who's installation is the coolest looking, safest, coolest looking, neatest, coolest looking, has the most practical knowledge, coolest looking system, ne, then we bribe them with beer and braaivleis, sommer karoo skaap affie plaas, to my possie once you have arrived. We then give it a once, sorry twice over (read fix my mess), share lekker idees en fix alles, en dan ne, dan gaan ons plaas toe en doen dit alles weer daar? :D

.... you know what, it was meant as a joke ... but why not? You need parts probably from a city shop instead of the closest ko-op ... interesting.

Naaa, won't work.

Plonkster, jy weet nog net nie, jy kom saam. :P

Jy moet die Pi gaan insit by Chris. :D

TTT I'm in ;). But jurre jhews ous are not going to give me any streetcred when they find out bout the Bellville connection. :P.

On a more serious note if you need a bed for the night in the middle Karoo give me a shout (bakkies and SUVs only).
