Busy with planning my grid tie system. Looking at around 15kW 3ph, no batteries, probably dual MPPT minimum.

While I have somebody's attention: is there a list of forum approved online shops anywhere?

I'm moving to a home with 3P soonest, so have been looking at a number of options. Depending on what the exact wiring / circuitry in the house looks like I'm leaning towards going for a couple of single phase Sunsynk 5kW inverters connected in parallel, together with a couple of strings of panels and some batteries.

From what I've read (and I'm useless when it comes to electrickery so somebody should confirm) you need to be able to balance your phases otherwise you pick up issues. The Solis 3PH apparently does that for you.

Why 3 phase?

The Sunsynks can be paralleled across phases.

They're full Super Hybrids. They may be a bit much (technology-wise) as well as price-wise for this application.

The price differential will be significant.

Can you show me a 3-phase hybrid inverter for less than R60k?

Oops yes.

Can't find a local price for their 5G hybrids.

Found it:

Model RHI-3P10K-HVES-5G (or it should be)

I could be mistaken but I don't think one can connect batteries to those models in the link. The Model RHI-3P10K-HVES-5G (or it should be) is an option, but requires the HV batteries - and we're still awaiting pricing (and stock) in SA.

Battery

  • Battery Type:
    Li-ion
  • Battery voltage range:
    160~600 V
  • Max. charge/discharge power:
    10 kW
  • Max.charge/discharge current:
    25 A
  • Communication:
    CAN/RS485

That's a different inverter to the one you linked. We're still awaiting pricing (and stock) in SA.

👍 I think you are right

I've just re-read your original post. You're looking for grid-tie with no battery, which leaves you with quite a few inverter options. Unfortunately my use-case requires hybrid.

Ja, but you know how this works. Grid-tied is the thin end of the wedge...

On the Solis option, I was very excited about the 3P hybrid when I saw it, because it's listed at about R50k. I spoke to one of their lead engineers and was less optimistic when I realised it has some differences / limitations to the existing single phase options. One of these being the HV battery system. The Pylontech HV's are about R20k a piece (for 48V, 2.4kW) and you would need at least 4 of them to reach the required voltage.

Welcome to the forum, Jakes!

Chat to our colleague Thomas v S.  He lives in your neck of the woods, runs multiple inverters and did the install himself.  You may find a lot of common ground...

I need somebody to teach me about islanding.........and how to do it.........😀

In grid-tied inverter terminology, islanding is a bad thing. If the grid fails, but the inverter doesn't detect the grid loss and continues to energize the lines

on it's AC input, then it is said to be islanding (or creating an island). This is not allowed, and so inverter manufacturers have to employ several different

methods of detecting this situation so that they can disconnect from the grid and prevent the creation of an island.
