I struck a great deal on 2V 500Ah cells to replace my batteries and want to pass them on to a good home. These are big ones and weight around 60Kg each. Good quality deep cycle solar battery.

So the original battery choice seems to be a bit unfortunate. How would the OP maximise his battery life in his current situation? Just a thought as it may be useful to use the batteries "up" before replacing them.

That was a very quick solution. Look into (i.e. Google) the series parallel combination of batteries to calculate what you need.
