Plonksters explanation is spot on. Why do you not want to cycle the batteries? If you only want to use the batteries for back up you can change the inverter setting to back up mode. In this mode the inverter will keep the batteries at 100% SoC as long as there is Grid supply. I just did a test to see how PV Master (instead of EzManage) works to change the inverter settings. I could not see any difference between the two apps. They both look the same and the both work in my case. Are you using the Goodwe SEMS portal? It is far from perfect but it will give you enough information to manage the system safely. I tried to upload the Goodwe portal data with a Raspberry pi to PVOutput (a better monitoring platform). Unfortunately (even with Plonksters guidance) I never managed to get it going. My Linux and Python knowledge is just not good enough at the moment 😞.

you are right. I did not know that you can also use PV Master to adjust the inverter settings using the local configuration option of the app. I never used PV Master to do that. I will try today and see if it works with my inverter or if it also screws with some of the settings.

PV Master has been discontinued. Goodwe is forcing you to use the SEMS portal app instead. It is a pity because PV Master was far superior than the SEMS portal app .

I have the same inverter and discussed and implemented a firmware update with the help of the support team at Goodwe. My problem was however different than yours (I had problems with the mppt's control behavior). There is 2 versions of the inverter. the older version serial number starts with 3 and the new version with 9. I have the older version. The firmware for the 2 inverters is because of the different microchips on their control boards different. Goodwe told me that they have stopped development of the old inverter firmware and send me a new control board with the latest firmware. I think it would be best for you to contact Goodwe and discuss your specific case with them. Your inverter has to be linked to their portal to enable the engineers to log on and evaluate what the best solution for you is.

I also have a Goodwe inverter but do not know how to force a reset because I never had a wifi problem with it. Did you already contact Goodwe? They are very helpful. [email protected]

makes a lot of sense. This is what a human tasked to manually optimize the max point would intuitively do. Just shows you how far AI still has to go to match or even surpass humans.

yes sometimes they do. Lost the fight with SWAMBO and the domestic worker 😁. I did however observe the mentioned inverter behavior even if only 1 cyclic load like the iron is constantly switching on and off.

thanks Plonkster for the feedback. It is not really a problem for me either. I think looking over a full days production the losses are probably negligible. I am just curious how inverters work. I would love to spend a day with the soft and hardware engineers in the development department of an inverter company and discuss all the details with them. I used to work in an internal combustion engine development department and understand the problems and compromises engineers face.

I observed the following. It is not 100% accurate because I can only monitor it with the EzManage App which updates the values only every 2 sec or so. Would be nice to have a fast real time graphical view of all the important parameters to analyze the inverters behavior. abrupt unloading of heavy load on Inverter: - back feed to grid for 3 sec - MPPT overreacts and almost shuts down PV production by increasing V - MPPT reaching maximum production level again after 15 sec (if the next load cycle arrives at < 15 sec MPPT never recovers and production goes lower and lower in every subsequent cycle) - Battery charging reduces or stops in line with PV production reduction - Battery charging back to max after 15 sec and > 30 sec if the inverter was in battery discharge mode abrupt loading of heavy load on inverter: - grid supply for 15 sec if there is sufficient PV capacity and > 30 sec if it has to change into battery discharge mode

the cycling loads of the washing machine, tumble drier and iron totally confuses my inverter. It is trying in vain to adjust fast enough to have an optimized PV yield. It is especially slow when it has to change from battery charging to discharging mode. Is this normal? Are the Goodwe inverters worse than the competition? Does the zero export setting contribute to this slow adjustment speed? Why is it difficult to build an inverter able to adjust much faster to changing load conditions?

Goodwe ES back up (UPS) neutral connection
Hi DunnPenny, I am not sure exactly what your set up is. My issue is very specific to the Goodwe ES inverter (or I guess any other GT hybrid inverter with a back up UPS functionality). I decided not to bridge the back up (UPS) and grid neutrals because this would (if the inverter goes into back up mode) create an earth neutral bond on my property which is illegal in South Africa. I do however think that it would cause no harm to the Inverter.

What does a basic solar schematic look like
Hi Antony, if I remember correctly you have purchased a ES series Goodwe inverter. I have the same and found the wiring diagram in the manual very accurate and helpful. The only thing it does not show is the isolators and fuses on the DC side (Panel array and Batteries). As Plonkster advised you need both. For the panel array I have used Noark Ex9BP-N 10A (isolator and fuse combined). Attached is my wiring diagram (not yet approved by the engineer)

thanks Plonkster for the information. It looks like unfortunately the available diverters will not work well without turning off zero export. I am hesitant to allow the inverter to export (even a small amount) because my meter charges me for the units exported.

thanks Chris for the link. Do the power diverters also work if the GTI is set to zero export? I was of the opinion that they rely on the signal from the CT clamp if power is exported.

I agree. I have the same problem. That is why I am still looking for an automatic power diverter solution to switch on stuff like pool pump, aircons, geysers, borehole pump etc. if there is excess power available.

interesting graph. What is causing this rapid cycling? Would it not be better to let the SOC go lower in order to harness as much solar energy as possible. Looking at the below graph I think you could have harnessed more energy between 11:30 and 14:00.

I know what you mean 😁! I see you are not using your batteries at all if consumption is > solar. What is the reason? I thought that moderate cycling will give you the best return on your battery investment.
