Not correct. The SANS spec states explicitly that the panels' earth must be separate.

lol how is it separate if its bonded to consumer earth ?  If you bond your earth spikes to consumer earth it means you are using the consumer earth ....

Is there a difference between earthing and bonding?

Consider also what the purpose of the earth is, exactly what is being mitigated.

Google Mike Holtes on you tube regarding earthing and bonding.  Very good explanation.  He regognise that few people understand the difference.  You kinda have to understand electrical theory to understand how it works he states. Also, lightning protection is different to earthing and bonding.  I Agree, the question is what are you trying to achieve.

Yes, I am familiar with Mike Holt's training videos, they are excellent. In fact, I watched his grounding and bonding video a few times, eventually made some notes 😁

A very belated answer. BUT. The standard do not state that. Para 7.12 has many sub paragraphs and none of them state what the guys above says. I hate it if someone pretends to quote a paragraph and he obviously has not even read it. (YellowTapemeasure, where in 7.12 ???) I have just done an intensive study of 10142 specifically with this in mind. The deciding factor is that panels are double isolated devices, which means there are sufficient separation and makes that a useless exercise.

Hi Marius (love your very helpful videos) - I have a remote (Cederberg mountains) install coming up where Inverter/battery and solar array will possibly be 100m removed from each other. The array is quite exposed to possible lightning strikes. Are you saying that an array grounding will not be required? Also, what would your opinion be on the positioning and earthing of the DC Protection box installed at the array vs installed at the Inverter/Battery/DB location? The electrician will have to install a grounding rod or equipment at the inverter/Battery/DB location. Any assistance from yourself or members will be appreciated.
