Victron or....

Featured Replies

Hi guys. New here but following for a while now.

Is there a reason why Victron doesn't feature that much?

I'm looking at following system. 8kw Quatro inverter, GX Touch50, Cerbo GX, Solar MD 14.1kw,

I still need to sort out mppt and panels. 8 East and 8 West

Any input will ve appreciated.

Victron is insanely overpriced ,thats why . I would recommend the 8kw Sunsynk or even two of them and it would still probably be cheaper than a Victron alternative.  I also dislike that they still advertise in Kva and not Kw as many people think its the same thing but in reality its a marketing thing used to make it seem like you are getting more than what you really are.

Thanks. I'm more interested about functionality and robustness than price. Also incorrectly stated as kw instead of kva thanks for rectifying.

At this point I can get my hands on a Quatro for more or less the same as 8kw Suncynk.

I'm guessing the blue item does not have a or even 2MPPT's so, subtract pricing wise form the SS and you will see that you can't really compare, some of us need to consider pricing, that's why the Sunsynk is the more likely option for most and some even need to aim lower.

I'm sure Victron is good equipment, mostly, but I can't justify or afford to pay for it, so I'm on the pauper end of the Solar scale 🙂 good for you not having to turn the pennies around multiple times before spending them...

If you plan on using a generator the Quattro is superior.

As Keith from Sunsync has explained in some videos the Input side of the Sunsync is on a common bus, meaning any AC input limit is applied to both the GEN and GRID input.

You can however limit the battery charging current while on the GEN input on the Sunsync, but that's just a band aid.

With the Quattro you can say :

Grid (AC1) input current limit : 60A

Gen (AC2) input current limit : 25A

It will then automatically throttle the charger up and down if it's on Gen to stay in the 25A input current limit. whilst giving you the full charging power once it switches back to grid.

Personal 2c. You'd have to compare the full Victron system to do a fair comparison to the Sunsynk in terms of functions.

Combine the 8kw Quatro inverter, GX Touch50, Cerbo GX and two of the Victron 250/100 MPPT controllers as a system, and it should be a reasonable equivalent to what the 8kW Sunsynk can do in one box.

I suspect that the Victron system will be superior in robustness and execution, but for the cost and simplicity I think most people are going the route of Sunsynk.

Thanks for the input. Money to waste I definitely don't have, and I'm aware of the mppt's and other stuff that is included in the Suncynk.

All in it looks like I will spend R27k more on Victron than Suncynk.

Any feedback on the 14kw MD solar battery?

To add to that getting any support from Victron Energy South Africa is a pain in the ass. Ask me!

Ive been running my Victron setup for close to a year. Its only the 3kva. It only produced 2.4kw I had a voltronics rebrand before that.

The voltronics could not run the wife hair dryer nor the poolpump or AC from that. The unit would trip.

The victron handles that like a champ!

Im in Cape Town, and the support is excellent! If i would need support, victron can log into my setup and fix an issue if its software related.

I did had a issue with one of the units where it develop a ground relay issue. Within 3 days i had a brand new unit.

Support in my opinion is excelent.

Yes, they cost more. Im not denying that. But on a R250k quote, what is R20k extra for superior quality.

What I found with the victron installs as that the customer are paying less in the longrun regards supports and callout fees.

Agree, the sunsynk are an all in one unit. They are great looking units. But if something breaks.  Ie, solar is not specs correct and the mppt blows, then the whole unit needs to be removed.

Ive heard so many guys with victron units that had the same setup for 10 15 years.

Ive also saved so much money with the victron. Im running it is ess mode. For 2022 my total electricity will was a 17/83 split bewteen eskom and solar. 17 eskom 83 solar. That from a 2.4kw setup. We are 4 adults and 2 kids.

Again, yes, victron is more expensive if you compare it like for like. But if you look at the total price of the installation, then it makes sense. Remember, to install a 8kw inverter requires alot of batteries to keep within the specs of the batteries.

Disclaimer, im no installer or working for victron. Just a user who enjoys the sun!
