LED Indicator Light Wiring

Featured Replies

Good day, can anyone please tell me what the legal requirements are with regards to the green and red LED indicators which I believe (as a non specialist) should be part of a solar installation.  Can the installer decide NOT to install these indicators?

Thank you

Yes as per Sans regs the LED indicators is a must including labelling of each indicator. You are correct it should be part of any solar installation. The installation will not pass a COC without these indicators and db labelling so installers do not have a choice.

Do the standards require green and red or just indicators (of any colour) ?

I have seen all sorts of colours on installs, red, green, amber, white so the regs don't specify colours just needs to be visible and as @Virwatindicated correct labelling.

To visually indicate whether the grid or load circuits are energized or not.

Other than the indicators I already have on the inverter? It's quite easy to look at my inverter and know if the grid is up, if the inverter is connected to it, and if I'm consuming or feeding back. Ummm.... assuming you know what the symbols under each LED are.

It is a SANS requirement. Not really optional if you want a valid legal COC.

If your inverter is switched off then the indicators will show the technician or whoever is looking at the db or planning to work on the db's that the loads and grid are still energised or not on by-pass or not.

The inverter being switched off does not automatically mean the essential loads are off, if the by-pass is on grid then the essentials will be energised and will be indicated as such to whoever is looking.

It takes guessing out of the safety equation.

Thanks for that explanation. This makes sense. I've seen those LEDS on or near the change over switch when generators are properly wired in (IE no suicide plug)
