Why not use cable ferrules

Featured Replies

Most solar installs, not all, tend to have stranded cables either from the Battery to the Inverter just screwed in. Apart from perhaps space considerations or maybe increasing resistance is there any particular reason why cable ferrules are not used to crimp cable strands together then this may ensure that they hold a lot firmer around the place they are being tightened. With expansion and contraction obviously over time one needs to keep checking that the cables are still firm, without them, so sure (thinking out loud), ferrules would make sense to become a standard in electrical installations? Am not an electrician, may someone kindly give me wisdom, thanks.

Bootlace ferrules are used to protect the loose strands of thin flex wires from getting damaged when tightening the screw of the breaker/terminal etc.

If the terminal has a cage, you can sometimes get away without using bootlaces on flex, although not recommended.

Ordinary ferrules are too thick and won't budge from the terminal screw. Now if you did not do a proper crimp on the ferrule, no matter how tight you fastened the screw, you will end up with a loose / hot connection. IMO

True, proper crimping is required and if it's done then my idea is so ferrules as I have said, ensure that cables remain firm and secure and heat remains minimal/normal.

Sorry maybe I don't follow or don't see the full picture here. Most batteries & their cables will involve a suitable lug & will be crimped. Bootlace ferrules have a place, however, on a battery I honestly dont see where this could be used.

Maybe for PV cables or AC cables especially if panel flex wires are used. But for a battery I'm yet to see an opportunity to use such a ferrule.
