My Goodwe has always given an occasional error code 524288: High DC Voltage.

AIUI this is the inverter complaining that the voltage on one of the strings got too high. These usually result in a derating of PV panels as, as far as I can see, the inverter slaps the offending string down to zero then starts dealing with it again.

The number of instances of this error per day seems to have increased lately, though it may be that I have more time to spend looking at apps on my phone. Certainly I get more of them on sunny days.

I emailed Goodwe SA. They tell me two things

  1. My inverter is no longer under warranty

  2. They tried loading the latest firmware but the system gave an error code 524288 which messed with their install.

Now I only get those errors at times when the panels are generating power IE when the sun is up. I never get them in the evening. So I asked if they could not just schedule an upgrade for, say, 6 in the evening.

What they’ve said to me is that I need to install the upgrade, and I can do that using SolarGo.

Except I can’t.

Goodwe have on-line documentation on this procedure, but what they show is not what I see. I should qualify this by saying that their document was written early 2025, and there have been at least 3 revisions of SolarGo since.

But the crucial thing is that they show SolarGo connecting to an inverter, and then asking if the user is an owner or installer. To install firmware upgrades you need to be an installer. In their example there are different passwords for installer and owner.

I don’t get that prompt. I don’t get asked anything about owner or installer. I just get the menus. And there’s no menu option for installing a firmware update.

So now what? I can’t do it, Goodwe support won’t.

So this has gone around and around in circles, leaving unanswered questions.

Now a snide way of looking at what Goodwe SA do is to say "all they know how to do is apply a firmware upgrade". But that's probably all they can do. Or nearly all. They can't come out and inspect the cables or measure the voltage coming from the two PV strings.

But what they could do, and I've asked them, is say "this error code indicates that such-and-such is happening. You should get a Goodwe accredited technician to check the following..." I've asked. They haven't done this.

Goodwe's on-line documentation gives two different explanations for the error code.

Goodwe SA have been trying to upload a firmware upgrade but when the system throws the error it reboots and puts the kibosh on their upgrade.

They want me to do the upgrade. They say I can use an app on the phone. They won't tell me where I can get the latest firmware, they won't give me instructions. They say I can use their SolarGo app. I have that on my phone, but Goodwe's online documentation of this process shows SolarGo with prompts and options that I don't have. My best guess is that there is some sort of installer access that Goodwe have to grant, but they don't want to do that either.

So now I have to do what I didn't want to: Call in a technician to do troubleshooting.

The most likely explanation is that the input voltage is too high for the MPPT. So they are going to take measurements (hopefully around midday on a sunny day when the panels are producing well), and then maybe disconnect a single panel. If that doesn't solve the issue then they have to dig further. I am comfortable with this one-thing-at-a-time approach, but obviously the installer isn't going to do this for free. Another possibility is an intermittent short somewhere on the string. This means checking all the cabling. More time and money.

If it is one of those errors I can't blame Goodwe SA. But see above: They could have said that I need to check these things.

I suggested to Goodwe that they update after 16:00 when the chance of an error is less.

They uploaded the new firmware at 16:005 and then rebooted the system.

Now the firmware is updated - 2625M

I don't have the figures for the panels handy. I'll have to dig for them.

Now that the firmware is upgraded I want to see if I get errors tomorrow.

I had the same problem and i removed 1 of my panels on the string that was going to 380v all the time when it rebooted all the time

Now everything is ok

Looks like you can push the strings to about 330-340v then they reboot which is quite annoying as it takes a few minutes every time as it ramps up slowly to max power

Now my string only goes to about 320v and the other goes to about 275v (one string faces north and the other is north and west mixed)

Combined i had about 6.8kW of panels of 400w now i have 6.4kW which works better

I do get a weird jump up in power on the 1 string at about 9:30am every day when the inverter seems to go from trying to keep both strings at the same amperage and it then switches over to trying to keep both strings at the same voltage

After a while if the sun is constant with no clouds they both balance out to about 305v and 285v so looks like it wants to go to about 600v max for both strings combined but gives a bit of leeway

Thanks @paul99 . This is what I was thinking of, but as my signature says, I am not an engineer, electrician nor installer, so what do I know. I have a guy coming this afternoon and I am going to ask him to take one panel out of the ENE facing string - the one I think is causing the shenanigans. The error logs that I can see show that string going over 400V just prior to the shutdown. Yes... I'll lose a little power on that string, but the inverter has restarted seven or eight times today, and each time the MPPTs ramp up slowly and the inverter pulls from the grid to make up the short fall. So one panel less might be a good trade off.

The panels on that string are about 42V VOC, and there are ten of them. So this fits with your observations and removing one panel might get me back into steadier waters.

  2. ITSM that changing the grid code may just mean that the error condition is still occurring, just not reported.

  3. I have been in contact with the guy who did my panel upgrade last year. He likes to work systematically. He doesn’t know Goodwe. But he knows a dealer who does know Goodwe. They have given him a sequence of tests which may or may not point to a problem with one of the strings. But they caution that it could well be a problem with MOSFETs.

  4. As soon as we get a sunny day in Joeys he will come out to conduct the tests.

So I got an email from them confirming that they have logged into the inverter, checked all the settings and I now should not touch anything. Well, I don't know what all they changed, and I mostly don't touch that stuff because I am scared of letting out some smoke. I have changed the mode that it runs in (in Goodwe language theses modes are "general", "TOU", "off-grid"), I have changed the TOU settings, and I have switched safety codes between "South Africa" and "default 230V". But all those things with numbers next to them: uh uh. I ain't touching that.

Two things I have noticed, though not at the same time. As reported above, the error messages stop at a certain point. The other thing I noticed later is that from the 5th (day they sent the later email saying they had checked all the settings), the charge current never exceeds 1kW, even when the system is charging from grid. So I think they changed one of those things with numbers next to it.

They also told me to leave the system set to 50Hz default.

The days of having my battery charged up by 11:30 are gone. And today - nice and sunny - it looks like the days of having my battery charged up by 15:00 are also gone.

Goodwe are staying in touch with me. They acknowledge the slow charging and say they are going to change settings and monitor. They say that this will include the DOD settings, that they can set these to use the battery more efficiently. Well... I'm not sure about that, and last time they set them so that the battery would not discharge past 80% SOC. (and SOC is the inverse of DOD).

So to recap: Goodwe SA loaded the latest firmware and changed some settings. The errors have stopped. But the battery was charging significantly more slowly after the changes were made.

Initially they limited the charge current to 19.9A - effectively just over 1kW. I explained the problems this was causing and they increased the limit to 50A. This for a 10kWh 1C battery (FreedomWon LiTE 10/8) and an inverter that can provide a maximum 125A to the battery. This is an improvement, but checking Goodwe's own portal for this year to date reveals that the battery was charging at over 4kW at times - more like 80A.

Goodwe have a document they say is from FreedomWon, saying that to retain the guarantee the battery must not be charged at greater than 0.25C - hence them imposing the 50A limit. The same document says that the "sweet spot" for fast charging, battery life, cable temperature (the battery comes with it's own DC cables) is 80A. I have asked Goodwe to set the charge limit to that.

They also said to me that they have to be conservative with their settings because they can't see the size of the cables, the quality of the connections, the fuses used for the install (100A - less than the inverter can provide, an interesting strategy by the installer) etc. So I wonder if they are not getting blamed when they change settings on an inverter and then something burns out.

OK, this is interesting now. Goodwe told me they have no access to the BMS and yet they were able to limit the charging current. On March 5th they set it to 19.9A. After much imploring by me they upped this to 50A, the value they have been given by Pylontech & Freedom Won. Their document from FW seems to refer to a 2 tier warranty that became effective in 2025. The lower tier, which would apply to my 10/8, says 60A to 80A is a sweet spot, with 80 being the maximum. Yesterday they changed the limit to 80.

I don't want to be too harsh. They can make changes way beyond what an installer (or end user) can make using the Solargo app. And I can see cases where they would set up an inverter and then get blamed because the battery warranty was voided or a fuse popped or something, so they have to cover their rear end.

You're spot on not to come down too hard on them. Goodwe's remote adjustments are mainly there to protect against issues like voiding the battery warranty or popping fuses so they cover their side and the installer's. It's understandable that it feels frustrating when they start off super conservative. With the limit now set to 80A, you're sitting nicely in the zone that Freedom Won recommends for your LiTE Home 10/8 based on their updated guidelines around the 2025 changes. That should deliver solid performance while keeping things safe and warranty complaint, especially under the standard performance terms where they emphasise staying within balanced charge/discharge rates for longevity like not exceeding 0.25C continuous charge for the higher tier, with 0.5C discharge limits. If you notice any strange throttling during charging even at this limit, have a look in the SolarGo app or SEMS Portal for the BMS reported charge current limit, battery temps, or any fresh faults popping up. Those values come straight from the battery BMS, so they'll give the real picture.If everything checks out but you're still unsure, it might be worth asking Goodwe nicely for written confirmation that 80A is locked in as the ongoing setting now, with no plans for further remote tweaks unless there's a specific reason. That way you've got peace of mind moving forward.

I can always view that charge limit in SolarGo, but I can't change it.

Hello, are those 524288 errors now really a thing of the past? They haven't crept up again? Reason I ask is that they've recently started with me, and it has nothing to do with the battery charge limit.

Background:

GW5048D-ES installed in 2020, overall I've been quite happy with the inverter running a single string of 10 panels - voltages would peak at around 460 no problems!

Recent EV purchase has had me paying too much money over to Eskom :-/ Time to fill the 2nd MPPT input :-)

Long story short, I needed to physically move the original array to make space for the addition, plus "downgrade" from 10 to 8 panels on that string due space and inverter specs considering new array. Mounted 4 original panels and ran out of time / daylight, so connected them up - ran as expected for two days. BUT, this was now on newly installed cable on MPPT2.

2 days later I added the other 4 original panels to that string. Connected them and the inverter relatively quickly started spitting out the 524288 error!

Hmmm, could it be the different MPPT? Or earthing (suggested by Google), as I hadn't yet earthed the panels / rails. Moved back to MPPT1 and it was working fine!

Another 2 days, finally time to connect the new string - yet again started with 4 panels, connected to MPPT2, and also earthed all panels and rails - however, the earthing is a bit of a temporary "twist the earth wires together against a plug earth" until I get time this weekend to properly connect all (no thunderstorms on the horizon).

Relatively quickly spat out same 524288 - hmmm. MPPT2 or not earthed nicely? Tested array earth against main DB earth, gave a strange intermittent reading! Back to the temporary "twist the wires" earth connection, twisted more and the problem was solved - error disappeared and array earth gave proper reading against DB earth.

That was yesterday- today the system ran beautifully, all as expected, until around 15h00 this afternoon ... grrrr, was planning to install final 4 panels to the 2nd string tomorrow, but have now put that off in case of need to troubleshoot (once those 4 panels are installed there's no space to access individual panel MC4s in case one of the panels is leaking excessively).

Instead I just made the "twist the earth wires" more secure by screwing all together properly in a busbar I had lying around (until I have time to run them correctly to the DB - the plug earth does not suffice for permanent install!).

So now the wait - will run system for a few days to confirm the error doesn't reoccur and then add the final 4 panels and run the earth correctly to the DB. I do think (hope) the problem was an intermittent earth and not an issue with my MPPT2!

So, to recap:

  1. I highly doubt its got anything to do with the battery charge limit.

  2. These inverters should run higher Volts no problem! Someone mentioned 380V, thats way below the inverter limit and i personally have been running 460V without problems for 5 years.

  3. I suspect "inadequate" earthing of the panels to be the culprit in my case - @Bobster. & @paul99 , are you guys sure your panel earthing is good?
