Gerrie
I am planing a solar installation at the South Coast and have a problem with lots of shade due to high trees. Is it worth considering a wind turbine, or is it uneconomical as I have recently read. The property is high and normally have a nice draft. Than there is a problem with monkeys and I don't know what they will do with a wind turbine. Any input will be appreciated. Clint
Guest
From what a few has said here on the forum, check your average wind speed and all that, for the area you are in. The actual place to do that, slips my mind for the moment.

DeepBass9
High trees will disrupt the wind potentially. How about cutting g the trees down?

Some of the trees are also from my neighbors property, I do sometimes trim the trees around the house but would not want to cut them down, my wife would also not forgive me. Normal PV panels might be ok but I think I will loose some efficiency.
DeepBass9
It would be a tragedy to cut down those trees, I thought maybe they could be blue gums or something. Just my experience with a wind turbine, firstly you need a lot more wind than you think, and when the wind does blow, it is often not when you need it. Also wind turbines are expensive, calculate the number of solar panels you could buy for the same price. I Should maybe install more solar panels to try and capture as much as possible of the midday sun.
DeepBass9
I think it would be best to try and figure out the best place to put panels, and then oversize a bit for the shading effect of the trees. Is there the possibility of putting up a carport type structure somewhere with better sun? The other thing about wind turbines is they are noisy and your neighbours might not appreciate that. root
Just as a warning. Wind turbines are noisy. Very noisy. I don't think you would be able to live in the house with one above the roof.
DeepBass9
Mine is about 40-50m away, and I can hear it now as it is windy today.

OK thanks that puts the wind turbine question out of the way, would rather not go that route.

There is a Wind Turbine in Glenvista (Comaro rd) and on Friday I stopped at the guys house. I was about 20m from it and could not hear anything. (And yes it was spinning) Could it be model dependent? But it won't make any angry pixies either.
DeepBass9
If it is just spinning in the wind then it is quiet. If the wind is blasting and the turbine is actually doing some work, then you hear it.
Den
The mast is taller and a good wind generator. It will turn out like this. wind generator Ukraine
Anonymous
Average wind speed in your area needs to be 6.5 ms or higher The noise of the turbine depends on the brand and blade design. A good design makes less noise than the wind does. High trees and buildings cause turbulance turbines do not work well in turbulance. So either cut the trees down or install a very high tower.
