Battery Questions

Wow thanks Chris, it made a huge difference i see. I am a bit stupid with the balancers. What would you recommend for a 24 volt battery system 4 batteries 200 ah? Thanks again for the links and info you provided

  • Hi ebrsa I think the terms got a bit mixed up somewhere in the chinglish. The HA02 is not technically an equalizer, but rather a balancer and by keeping the batteries balanced you might need to p

Hi Manie

You have 2 options:

  1.  2 X HA01s one on each string.
  2. 1 X HA01  with a fused midpoint connection like in this Victron diagram. There was some controversy with regard to the midpoint connection but I think most folk accepted that if it was fused it was OK.

Thanks Chris appreciate it a lot. I will have a look if i can source it somewhere in SA (oom Google) Ones again thank you so much for the info and links, If there is members on the forum that bought it local , i would appreciate it if they can provide me the info of the shop.

The Victron Balancers used to cost about R1287.19 ex vat each, which I thought was not that bad?

Yes TT. Not bad at all. Where can n buy them?

Send me a PM.

A HA02 costs R856 which is equivalent to 3 Victron balancers. My three HA01 cost R1235.88 plus R200 shipping. I don't think Victron balancers are cheap.

Thanks Chris.

@KLEVA from where did you order the HA02 from ?

Can the balancers balance 6v batteries in a 24v or 48v bank?

As far as I know not one of the balancers even Victron ones are designed for less then 12V batts.

What I did is check that the batteries I pair together to make 12V have basically the same voltage.

All I do is check the voltage between these paired ones every now and then to make sure all is good (no other way of doing this for me unfortunately)

My highest midpoint deviation so far was 0.078v and just like a second or two before the balancers kicked in under charge, then they are around the 0.000-0.02V (even under high load)  real happy with this :)

Manie - Ordered from American Company, but still waiting on delivery though, before I recommend anyone.

TTT - From what I understand from the limited chinese docs and the labeling on the case - The limitation is only in what it bypasses to make them equal, which is probably why they take so long to get a big bank back to proper equalisation (as per Chris's experiences). But I have only seen references for up to 12V (per battery) (but case markings seem to show as low as 1.2V (presumably for a Ni-Cad?).

Oh just to add though, they are for 4 batteries in a bank, hence I bought 2 and will install a seperate BMV when have cash again, so each bank on it's own monitoring.

Thanks Kleva. Excellent blog, thanks for that !!!

One could buy a HA01 and pair the batteries to make 12V. I ended up connecting one HA 01 incorrectly and it was flashing LED to tell me that it was under 10V.

The minimalist instructions (literally and figuratively - they are printed on a piece of paper the size of two match boxes which I read with a magnifying glass) says for 24V 36V 48V or any other combination of 12V.

It shunts current when a 20mV difference between the two batteries is detected.

Optimising current 0-5A

Quiescent  Current <3mA.

Low Voltage disconnect 10V

But then, for 4 x 6v batteries one needs 1 x Victron Balancer not so? For it is then 2 x 12v batteries.

Jip 1 will do for 24V and for 48V bank you need 3 ;)

Will one do for a 24 V 4 batteries ?

Eina!!!

I guess i must have 2 then ?

Nope for a 24V bank you just need one

Wiring diagram for both 24v and 48v bank below

even for parallel banks( but I'm not 100% sure of this I would rather have separate ones for each bank)

Thanks Viper

I am pretty sure if Victron says one is fine, it is fine.

It is not a cheap product - so they would be very careful not to mislead you.

Having said that, IF you do find a problem, email them direct, and they will assist. :D

Thanks Jaco. What is the total price with vat for a Victron
